Sprint & Hill Climb Regulation Proposed Changes - Blue Book Section S

Post by PeterSM » Wed Aug 14, 2019 7:28 am

MSUK have been reviewing the regs for cars competing in sprints and hill climbs. The main differences seem to be:-

Classifications now; Standard Cars, Road Cars, Modified Cars, Sports Libre Cars and Racing Cars.

Standard Cars and Road Cars may use any "EU compliant labelled 117 (EU compliant road tyres) tyres.

For Modified Cars the removal of the engine block regulation:
"13.6. Engine
13.6.1. The engine block must be externally identifiable as that fitted to the original model or specified option. Modification to all components is permitted."

Full proposal here:
ACTION SHEET FOR CONSULTATION - S&HC - Final v2.pdf
(321.07 KiB) Downloaded 21 times
I will bring some printed copies of the proposals to Curbs.
Should prompt some discussion!

That’s interesting - although there is still series production and specialist production subtypes in roadgoing (now just road) cars, you’re no longer automatically in sports libre for a non-original engine.

Looks like list 1A will disappear and it’s up to us to ensure the tyre is compliant?

It seems to also clear up any issues with numbers and “our” cars for some of the smaller runs (Scimitar Sabre or SST specifically), as well as the alternative engine debate.

Could it mean that there might be 1b style tyres that because they do not appear on the 1b list could now assume to be 1a if there is no 1a list?

I suspect so reading that - probably because keeping up with current tyres is probably a constant (and somewhat unnecessary) headache.

I suspect with road tyre regulations there won’t be many in the 1b list that are road legal, hence “Road Cars” being the revised classification and leaving the decision up to HM Gov?

no, you can’t assume it’s road compliant if it’s not on the 1b list - it will have to have EU 117 markings.

yes but are they marked EU 117? R888R are currently road legal but they’re clearly 1b.

Did I misread the “minimum of 20”?

that was already in there (20 chassis, not vehicles) - they’ve deleted series and specialist in modified.

Re tyres, non List tyres are allowable by the looks, but championships may still specify List 1A or 1B for specific championships. I think the essence of the change is to allow Johnny Newcomer to do an event or 3 on whatever perfectly legal road tyres are in it, without having to fork out for specific 1A tyres in RG. To be fair, most scrutes never really enforced it, but seems the ruling hs been relaxed to be more welcoming to newbies :-)

Engine changes in RG/MP again just seems to be to encourage cars with engine swaps simply to keep costs down (180hp scrapyard 50 quid zetec in a mk1 escort, as opposed to a £15,000 180hp crossbow which was period correct).

My only worry there is those that fit a 600hp LS3 V8 in an MG Midget with original brakes and suspension  but if you're daft enough why should I worry...

EDIT
I would hope that if its passed and allowed for 2020, clubs and championships add specifics to their regs to ensure safety levels track with power increases
