Wanted - short offcut of used windscreen filler SE6 onwards

Post by drcdb15 » Sun Jul 07, 2019 9:50 pm

Does anyone have a short section of 'chrome' filler strip for the SE6 onwards windscreen? Mine has shrunk over the years... (but enough about me...) Does anyone have an offcut of a few inches or so I could have, please?

This is purely cosmetic and I hope that an oldish piece won't look too out of place. Naturally I will pay your postage costs. Thanks

That looks like a pre 6 series seal and infill piece. The 6 series has a different seal with a trim finisher.

IIRC its not a filler but a bit of metal strip which fills the gap

Just messing with screen seals myself have had a few requests for replacements I have dug out the extrusion I bought from Scimpart many years ago.

There are/were Two types of rubber and Three types of filler strip.

Early "Teardrop" shape,
Then with the intro of the SE6 Reliant used a Stainless steel embellisher strip, then the infill became a wide plastic/chrome type finish as the SS embellisher became expensive to make/buy and a bugger to fit. :w

I think Middlebridge would have used any available screen seal that looked "Right", or Chris`s has been changed at some time. :?:
My 6b`s have the "Teardrop" type fitted and when my GTC was resprayed the PO used the early type as it was cheap and available at the time.
I only have the Later type rubber left, which takes either the SS embellisher OR the wider plastic infill.

I have a section of your type Chris if you want to PM an address to post it to?.

Hi Mark, many thanks for all that information.

As regards "MB would have used any available seal that looked right", I am increasingly reaffirming my views in my thread about replacement door speakers - whilst MB production set out with the best of intentions about producing a premium car, it seems pretty obvious that as the end became un-ignorable by the management they must have decided to clear old stock and cut costs right down, and reverted to using anything for any item they thought they could get away with - a shame, of course, but under their circumstances wholly understandable.

The result is that the later MBs probably have more than a few hotch-potch of bits that for many owners won't yet have come fully to light. I don't think there are many MBs that have yet had a complete body-off full resto, and those that have will likely be the earliest ones.

I've PM'd you separately with my address so many thanks for your offer of a filler piece.

It's been suggested to me, why not replace the whole filler strip? Then all of it would look nice and shiny. That's true, but then the seal proper is showing its age, so why not replace that too? And then since the screen is out, why not fit a heated screen? The answer is, too many other issues with the rear end window to open a new can of worms at the front! Maybe next year...

But thanks everyone for your thoughts and advice. Appreciated as always.
