What engine do I have?

Post by Stoddy » Thu Apr 25, 2019 9:55 pm

I've recently purchased a 72 5a. The engine number is different from that show on the vin plate. The number is C5977. Any ideas what this has come out of and what year it might be?

Thanks Alan

I thought Fords normally had 5 numerics after the 2 char date code, so that seems a little unlikely?

I was speaking to the chap from Essex engines while ordering a new timing gears and gaskets. He advise that the ford engines had 5 digit engine numbers . The number on my engine definitely starts with the letter C. Thanks for changing the heading!

Thanks Alan

Reliant stamped their own engines - are you sure there’s not a faint S before the C?

After a successful evening where I made some progress with my timing gear change I decided to have a closer look at the engine number with better light. Sure enough there's a tiny s infront of the C, so my number is SC5977, so a Scimitar engine but out of a later car. There's also the numbers 3C1 stampted in front of the S.

Thanks for your help.

SC5977 would be in an early 73 car if they were all sequential - there are several that are slightly out of phase, is your car early or late 72?

That ties in Jim. The car was registered 1st of September 1972 however the vin plate and registration document quote and engine number SC4454. That's why I assumed SC5977 is a later engine.
