Chassis paint - what to use ?

Post by lambo911 » Sun Mar 29, 2020 7:22 pm

Hi All,

I am treating and painting the chassis on my SE6a. I normally use Bilt Hamber products but as they don't do any kid of chassis paint so I was wondering what other people have used and if anyone could recommend something?
A spray would be good to get into the gaps but a brush on would be ok as well. I intend to cover it all in waxoil after painting anyway so I am not worried about getting a great paint finish.

Cheers
Richard

Chassis paint - what to use ?

It depends, how good a job do you want? The ultimate is epoxy primer. If you just want it covered with something black, then chassis paint.

I am using the bilt hamber products & mechanical methods to clean the chassis on mine and give it a coat of the bilt hamber epoxy mastic as it gets fantastic reviews.
The other bilt hamber products I have used have always performed exactly as expected.

Fully agree with Paul, use the Bilt Hamber epoxy mastic paint then overcoar should you wish with their Dynax wax system or the equivalent from Rust Buster, both great systems

It's interesting that anyone in industry anyone looking for longevity in a coating wouldn't think of applying any kind of paint over anything less than a sandblasted surface !
Over even firm rust the worm still operates ! The paint will debond.
On surfaces that can't be cleaned well enough and have a slight porosity i.e. rust, I mix Deb Duck Oil with whatever wax product you prefer. About 60/40 in favour of the wax.
I personally use the Car Plan stuff. Thin as required with white spirit if your spraying. Creeps everywhere and does last for years. ATF might work but never tried it.
if thinned to much you may have to give a few coats over several days. Normal common sense fire rules apply !!!
The good thing being it is easy to refresh.

Look at Jotun 87 and 90 too. It may be a bit cheaper as at least two other suppliers rebadge it as their own. Lechler is good for spraying bodywork, but the Epoxy mastic is probably a higher build with a brush where finish isn't critical.
