I'm also wondering if it could have the wrong spacer. The problems seem to have coincided with an engine rebuild

No cracks Jim, as that's what I was expecting. Theres about a 6": section of the ring gear that I can move in and out around 3mm.

When I got my GTC auto it made a terrible ringing / metallic sound when turning over. Looking into the cars history file this has been an ongoing issue. Anyway, I split the engine and box today and removed the flex plate. Now it does have a bit of damage on the ring gear though I've seen worse, but ...
