Hello folks, can anyone tell me what aspect ratio standard 165x15 tyres for an SE4a should be. The car that hopefully I will purchase soon sits very high. It's got, apparently TR6 wheels of unknown width shod with 185/15. On a test drive, 3 up, the rears were scuffing the wheelarches. Read all the posts, lots of suggestions, but can't find a definitve answer. Thanks, Mike, now a member, woohoo.

Unless specified, then aspect ratio is 80%

It's possibly the extra width that's causing the rubbing (plus being 3 up on unknown suspension)? I have tried a TR6 wheel on my coupe and am now looking for 4 more :D

Thanks Phil and Jim. The present owner told me that the wheels are a TR6 fitting, but when I spoke to him earlier today, he couldn't tell me what width they are. If they're 6", I will probably change them for 5.5" Still, don't have long to wait, I'm going for a "make your mind up viewing/drive tomorrow so will be able to check myself. Which TR wheel are you looking for Jim? The original steels with multiple round holes look pretty good I reckon, and are a period style. £162 a piece new though from Rimmers! TTFN, Mike.

Yep - originals with holes. I think they’re 6” wide.

Apparently, there are 2 widths available. Early cars used 5.5", later they went to 6". Got this from the Moss catalogue.

It could be the 185/80R15 tyres, that’s about 16mm taller tyre wall then the 165/80R15.

My previous coupe used to rub the rear wheels over bumps. Was old, weak springs rather than a tyre or wheel size issue.

Hi, I’ve 185/70/15 on my straight Six coupe on TR6 centrelock minilite copy alloys,no problem with rubbing, and just got a replacement set of 165/80/15 tyres for the 165 /15 fitted to the V6 coupe.They are Continentals and took my local Tyre guys a month to get them, but at £50 a tyre plus vat per wheel for a quality tyre I’m very happy with them, cheers Peter

To modernise and go wider and retain a similar rolling radius then it would be 185/70 to replace 165/80... and with the suspension in good condition should be no rubbing,but 185/80 would be wrong.

Love those replica Minilites with knock on centre locks,the best retro look alloys IMO.
I had some on an Elan +2, but those were on the Lotus peg drive system rather than splines as on the Coupe.

I agree, 185/70 is a good replacement for 165/80.

I have run wider on a road car , 205/60 - 15 from memory with no problems however some cars have rear axles that a little off centre

Different makes of tyres are also different widths at the tyre wall for the same width on the tread.
I have 195-65x15 on mine and the old Continentals had about 2mm clearance (axle well centred!) but the present Goodyears leave plenty of space.
I think I ground half the lip off the wheel arch to clear the Continentals but it was a long time ago ...
