Scimitarweb Problem Today

Post by Roger Pennington » Tue Sep 15, 2009 12:57 pm

All morning I have been unable to log-in and post messages. I have been getting a message along the lines of "unable to find the server shworth.com...." At the same time RSS, which I normally find totally reliable, is not working and is giving me a message "Internet explorer is unable to update password-protected feeds" which again presumably relates to a failure to logon. As you can see the first problem now seems to have gone away, however the problem with RSS still remains. Is anyone aware of the existence of a particular problem, or of any work-in-progress which could cause this?

thanks fo your help,

....Roger

Roger, no problems my end - I've been online continually since about 0700 at home (left logged in and just used it at lunchtime) and work. Steve in SA, CNH & mikerf have all been online too and no mention of problems.

Roger,

Try again with www.scimitarweb.com/sgwrs
It seems www.shworth.com is not reachable, so www.shworth.com/scimitarweb/sqwrs does not work either.

Thanks Erik, that does appear to work. However a couple of points:

The failure on attempting to reply was happening immediately on pressing the "reply" button at the bottom of the thread - instead of showing me the login screen as usual, it was giving the error. I don't understand why that failed for me, but appears to work ok for others? Surely what happens when you press a button (when already on the site) is always the same?

Second, In order to make the change you suggested, I had to resubscribe to the RSS feed and effectively set it up again. Hopefully this will be a permanent change? I get the impression that if we make frequent changes to RSS then (as well as being a nuisance) we may cut-off people who find it a usefull way to keep up-to-date with the forum, as I get the impression that general knowledge of RSS is limited.

cheers,

....Roger

All URLs to shworth. etc were a temporaly solution to hosting problems.
When the problems were solved, by hosting the site at Alyns own provider, no one ever thought of renaming a small setting back to scimitarweb.
I just renamed it. Now it has the name again it should have had for a long time.

as soon as I pressed send (above) on my computer at work - it crashed! perhaps that was Erik renaming the url because all of my links pointed to www.scimitarweb.com

Don't know if it's related, but the online club shop is similarly non-functional?

It probably is. At least it is hosted at shworth.com.
As I am only a forum admin, I do not have access to the shops internals.

I'm having a problem with it today. Is the online shop down ? I'm trying to pay my subs, but can't access the shop for some reason. I'll have to do it the old fashioned way. Now where did I put my chequebook..........?

Steve, if the shop is down at any time you can email an order direct and pay directly with PayPal to merchandise@rssoc.co.uk

Thanks Jim, that sounds like an easy solution. I'll get onto it.

Cheers

Is anyone making changes to the website? following the problem that I reported above, I made the changes suggested, and everything was working perfectly, with the website and RSS back to their usual reliable selves. However this evening RSS suddenly seems to be falling apart, missing whole batches of messages, which is a real pain.

Thanks for your help,

....Roger

I have lost RSS feed 'cos it was via shworth.com but cannot restart it via scimitarweb.com 'cos there is no RSS feed URL. Also most of the links inRSS messages refer to shworth.com which is unreachable...
