SE5A Fuel Level Warning Light Unit

Post by tony.idle » Tue May 06, 2014 11:33 am

I'm trying to finish off an article for Slice describing the operation of The Fuel gauge & Low Fuel Unit. I don't have a 5A and I can't find a spare Warning Light Unit. Could one of you kind gentlemen take a look at yours? I need the terminal designations which, if there are any, will be imprinted on the base of the unit. Associated wire colours would be handy but not essential. I'm well past the Slice contributions deadline so if you could take a look fairly quickly I'd be very grateful.

Regards

Tony

I was staring at it last night wondering if to leave it there or remove it given my fuel light is now the ECU diagnostic light on mine!

Just read a thread on a stag site - the unit is basically just a delay - they add it to stop the low fuel light flashing on corners at 1/4 tank full.

Which uses the same system (inc warning lights) as a stag :-)

The unit isn't actually a low level warning unit at all is it Tony? The sender indicates low fuel, this just stops it flashing all the time.

On a 5a, this uses the voltage (resistance) value - it's actually a miniature bimetallic gauge of its own with a "make" setting. Add in the hysteresis of the Smiths bimetallic system, and thats how it doesn't flash on and off like a devil like the float mounted version.
