Emissions test and catalytic converter

Post by Supersub » Mon Jul 29, 2019 4:09 pm

Quick question fella's. The Sabre just failed it's MOT on the emissions test. An examination of the exhaust appears to indicate that it should have a cat fitted since the pipe has an infill section fitted about a foot in length with flanges at each end. I believe that the K series fitted to the Rover had one so did Reliant do away with it when the Sabre was produced or should it have one. The few MOT certificates that came with the car do not have any of the emissions test paperwork attached so unable to cross check the results with those previously carried out. Maybe I am jumping to conclusions but beginning to think that the previous owner removed it after he had it tested.

Would appreciate quick response if possible as it's still on the ramp at Oxby's awaiting a decision as to what to do next. If it needs one can anyone supply part number and supplier or an alternative.

Many thanks

Mike

Mike, I believe the Sabre 2 fitted with the Rover K series engine did have a cat fitted. I do know Reliant Parts World have them in stock. It is possible QRG do too. Let us know how you get on. Cheers, Mike

Emissions test and catalytic converter

Have spoken to Nigel at Reliant Parts World. He gave me part no. 223027 which is listed by them on ebay. Although it states it's for the 1800Ti he says he's been told it is really the one for the 1.4 K series. Have attached pic so can anyone confirm this?

OK chaps. Panic over. Getting one from Nigel at QRG. He has them in stock. Cat only not full exhaust system. Will let you know final cost for future reference. Said he would do me good deal as he said last one he sold was 10 months ago.

Emissions test and catalytic converter

Mike, that's great news. My understanding is that, 1800Ti powered cars were never fitted with a cat. When European regulations tightened up on exhaust emissions, the CA18ET motor was replaced by the Rover 'K' series motor. These were all fitted with catylitic converters. If one is factory fitted, then the fitment is necessary to obtain a MOT pass.........unless anyone out there knows differently!

Only export Ti SS1 were fitted with cats so I’d imagine most mk2 Sabre Ti had one (most mk2 Ti were export).

All K series had them but I suspect they’d pass without one as long as the tester wasn’t too strict (we shall see as Megan the K series SS1 doesn’t have one :D )

Jim, that's an interesting anomoly. No SS1 came from the factory with a cat, so technically Megan shouldn't require one! Unless the MOT tester knows differently!

From memory, I think the one in the US has a cat and possibly a couple in Europe - factory fitted for export.

Edit - US car here - cat and twinspark.

Mention of Swiss twinspark and cat here.

Whether a car has a cat or not before an engine change is irrelevant - I think it goeson whichever’s oldest now, the car or the engine, so megan should be okay.

My GTE didn’t need to pass a cat test despite having the Omega engine fitted (which only came with cats).

Some time ago I worked with someone who had a late Vauxhall Nova SRi which needed a cat except he fitted an earlier GTE engine (and twin carbs) which didn’t - with proof of the age of the engine he had no issues with a late 80’s emissions test.

There is at least one UK Sabre Ti Mk1 (it’s green..) with a cat. It may have been a cancelled export order though - this is Reliant after all!

I think the Swiss SS1 Ti also has a cat.

Emissions test and catalytic converter

Post by Ford » Mon Jul 29, 2019 9:12 pm

I was reading a bit about this recently. MOT manual has criteria for vehicles used BEFORE 2002 with an older engine (test based on engine), cars used AFTER 2002 (test based on car), and a bunch of flow charts. https://www.mot-testing.service.gov.uk/ ... on_8.2.1.2
I couldn't see anything for cars used before 2002 that have a newer engine...

Also found that the 1.4l Rover engined Sabre is the only Reliant with emissions data published, and has the same limits as other cars with the same engine that definitely had catalytic converters. (https://assets.publishing.service.gov.u ... dition.pdf)

Just to help confuse/clarify my Mk2 LHD Sabre 18Ti was registered in the UK at the end of December 1993 to avoid the need for a Cat, which was a requirement as of Jan 1994.

I was under the same impression that 1993 was the change over but a niggle said 'K' plate means 'Kat required'

from that MoT flow chart
https://www.mot-testing.service.gov.uk/ ... on_8.2.1.2

"Emissions limits of non-passenger cars first used on or after 1 August 1992"

which would tie in with 'K' plate being 1992, making MoT tester's life easier as only need to refer to the plate not 'proof of build date' etc

There are some exceptions to the rule but they’re under vehicle specific exemptions.
