Recommendation for engine rebuilder

Post by Jpwill7675 » Fri Jul 19, 2019 9:02 am

I have a SE5a with manual overdrive. When I bought the car it had a slightly noisy engine that one investigation was ( I thought) due to a dropped valve seat . I sourced some different heads and had the valves recut and the head skimmed. On rebuild there was still a noise (clanging) and the engine ran a bit hesitantly. I think the valves were not recessed enough after the head skim and had the valves recut to the correct depth. On rebuild there has been no improvement. The engine runs but is still noisy. I have taken the engine out agin and stripped it down but have not identified the contact area causing the noise yet.

With the engine stripped, I am thinking of going for a full engine refurbishment. I have worked on quite a few engines, mainly motorbikes, but am nervous about any errors causing expensive damage to new pistons/ bores etc. There seems to be lots of places that can do the rebore/ crank grinding etc. but relatively few who will overhaul and rebuild the whole engine.

Can anyone recommend an engine rebuilder with experience of an Essex V6? I am after a standard engine rebuild not race tuned etc

I am in contact with Car Clinic in Darwen, but they couldn't do it for a couple of months.

Any other suggestions appreciated.

I am based in the South West but could ship the engine anywhere.

Regards, Jim

Brian North came on the stand at the Bristol Show last month and talked engines. Appeared very knowledgeable and motivated.
Claimed he was heading to retirement, so not as active as he was. He's been in business years and seems to have a good reputation.
Maybe worth a call to see if he's able to help?

I have used a company based in Plymouth called Raw Speed, not actually used them for a full rebuild only tuning however I know that they do full rebuilds.

http://www.rawspeed.co.uk/

*Edit* Just looked a their website and its pretty pants, their facebook page is a lot more detailed. They are called Raw Speed Tuning on Facebook.

They specialise in classic cars and I have taken a few of my past motors to them, am unsure about their current lead time though as I know that they are very popular.

Hiya. Geoffte from this forum and also Plymouth has had some real problems with a Plymouth engine builder re his lotus. Not sure of the name of the engine builder, but just a heads up as a fair bit of money was spent

Quick update. I found a bent pushrod today that I had overlooked  I guess that could be the cause of the noise and the misfire plus its an easy fix.
I am re-assembling the engine now. Fingers crossed for third time lucky :!:
