Hello there,

I'm Raz and I have got myself a tatty 1975 SE5A. I've always loved the shape and wanted one ever since I was at college. I've got two kids and a wife and live in London so parking and working on cars is a bit of a faff.

I have been very scared to introduce myself before as I'm not very mechanically minded but am happy to dive in and learn, like most I've been lurking for a while.

I've never had a car without fuel injection and now I own two and it's a learning curve for sure.

Anyhew my car is a 1975 SE5A was originally dark blue now it's gold with alot of lacquer peel. The car is complete even thou it had bits inside the car. The plan is to get it road worthy.

It's solid chassis wise not perfect but nothing to major to my untrained eye. I was lucky to meet Scimjim who gave me some seats which replaced the dirty fabric cobra's.

I started it finally today and it ran under its own steam but apart from the windows nothing electronic works!!!

Hope my tatty example fits in and is acceptable here.

Hi Raz and welcome, I'm new to scimitar ownership too and sounds like yours is about the same condition as mine, interior tatty various lights not working and windows that go down but not up. Long term project being done on the road outside my house.

Yep wish I had a garage but London is what it is.

I am friendly with neighbors and often help them with cars and they don't mind me tinkering with this and my daily which is a '82 Volvo 240, they just laugh at all the cars I drive as everyone has flashy euroboxes.

I was expecting snagging works but my car is rough and will be a mission.

Its just costing me insurance which is less tha £160 for both cars as it is MOT and road tax exempt so no big issues.

Bargain in regards to the insurance not the car as it is rough :(

Footman James classic insurance 3,000 miles a year (You can add more miles).

Well I had a MX5 and got a owners club discount, I got this for £160 sold that and transferred the insurance to the GTE. As it was older they said they owed me money. I then asked for then asked a quote for my 244dl and they said £30 so £168 all in.

I stopped our other main Volvo's standard insurance as it was about £300, so quids in now

Well big job, can't remember who mentioned this recently on here, they fitted new blades by butchering new ones to make them fit the old chrome holders but thank you.

Well done on the insurance - just be aware that if regular, modern car insurance lapses by 2yrs. or more, any no claims discount that has been built up is lost! I recently experienced this with a 2005 Honda Civic Sport that I ended up with for 6mths. The quotes were ridiculous.............despite me holding a full licence for 46yrs. & having driven everything up to & including a 7.5tonne lorry....& with a potential full 'no claims' several times over! I'm with Peter James re. classics & in that 6mths. I paid the equivalent of over 3yrs. premiums on 3 old classics, to RIAS! (£437) :evil:

Well this has been sat outside with no use for almost a year.

Bought a new battery and fire extinguisher and set about checking all lines and dropped the oil and refilled it with a new oil and fuel filter.

New K&N in the original pan.

Did it start....

Yes. Had to be helped with my foot on the accelerator but sat idling, stopped checked everything and then drove it for around my block (Private road) the tyres are old date stamped 2001 185/80/14s, the brakes were rebuilt prior to me getting it and it stops fine, I think the rear drums need a clean as I can hear them as I move.

*This is a cheap car and please don't berate me for my efforts. I am a novice, so I just need something to do to keep me sane due to my stressful job.

1. One job is vinyl between the the windows it was cracked so I removed it, sanded it down and sprayed it Matt black, I also refitted the GTE sign below. I will replace it once it's on the road and issues ironed out.

2. I polished all the chrome work, it's pitted in places but ok for now.

3. Body work is patchy so I've sanded some, sprayed it Champagne gold and lacquered it. It needs a respray but I like it rough, mainly because I can't afford a respray. If I could it would be triumph purple with black interior. Had a few large paint chips which I used fibre glass to fill, needs finishing off.

4. New speakers fitted and checked wiring for electric windows, they work now.

5. Replaced the interior lights with new reproduction ones. The roof lining is there but dirty. Cleaned all the plastics inside and put some linseed oil to feed it (makes sense in my head)

6. Cleaned the steering wheel and placed the 70's steering wheel cover.

7. Door cards placed with studs, I have ordered light brown screw cover caps and will screw them tight. Took ages to line it up for it just to pop back out. I will fit arm rest another time.

8. Sprayed the headlight surrounds in Matt black.

Needs a new gear knob and gaitor so ignore that 80's thing.
