LHD SE5a for sale in Germany

I didn’t think any factory LHD 5a’s were made at all? SE5, yes. SE6, yes. I’ve seen conversions but that’s it.

Yep - that’s a “hand-modified” dash. Also hand crafted door cards as the door pull was either a Mini one at the top, or the Escort ones half way up the door.

Looks like an se5 to me. The VIN is a 45****. So it SHOULD be an se5.
Engine has a rear sump. The dash is clearly a non-professional job. The fact it looks like an se5a should not be a real problem, as it is a later mod anyway. The speedo is a MLS one and not a KM/H. That is worrying to me. It does not looks like an original LHD. That specific VIN is not on my list of LHD se5.
I am afraid this is a car with a mixed identity. It is very unlikely to be an factory LHD car. It is a mix of se5 and se5a styles.
Then again, the car looks very tidy so I guess it is a good car.

It seems in a very good condition, for sure, but the conversion from RHD to LHD could be an issue and it has to be notified.
I don't know in other countries, but in France, in case of a major incident (with injured peoples for example), the insurance companies may use this modification as a way to void the contract (ok, for a Scimitar, you must find a real expert, but, when big amounts of money are involved they find them).
This is a common modification on MGB or Lotus Elise however I find that it doesn't worth the risk.

Unfortunately, there are far more modifications on this car than simply converted from RHD to LHD  they may have been carried out very well - and they’re certainly legal in UK (apart from the claim that it’s 1971) - but they should be declared by the seller and I’d want to inspect the rest of it very carefully :D

Just noticed the front seats don't match either - one SE5, one later 5a.. and the rear lights almost look photoshopped on? There's a funny border around them (unless that's making SE5 lights fit in a 5a hole)?

Chassis certainly won't have a 1971 chassis number stamped on it but seems to be more aligned with the engine and gearbox suggesting a post-72 car (has the later cross plate instead of the mountings for the tubular crossmember which fits under the engine when it has a front sump engine). Might have even been an auto previously based on the funny wiring block around the gearbox?

Nothing about that car suggests it's a 1971 to me - in part or whole. Even the reversing lamps look wrong?

That’s a relay isn’t it? Probably on the overdrive circuit?

Possibly - but you don't usually have a relay. Wiring goes from (one of) the overdrive switch(es), through the 3/4 enable switch under the linkage and to the overdrive solenoid.

A number of the photos are fairly poor quality, and look as though they've been edited to reduce burnt-out highlights and blocked-up shadows; if overdone, that can often result in "haloes" around changes in light level. So I suspect it might be that? I've just noticed the engine appears to have an Se6/6a thermostat housing.....

My spies say that there was an SE5a in Denmark 30 years ago which the owner converted to lhd - with difficulty.
The vinyl covering on the dashboard could be hiding all sorts of botches.
Denmark is not far from Hamburg ...

That car was a blue car with a 'proper' registration. It was sold in the UK about 20 years ago, traded to something else British classic. Where it went, I don't know. Surely not in the Netherlands or Belgium.
