A last (I hope) note on doors, I was slightly irritated after adjusting the thing to the nearest thousandth of a millimetre to find that it still tended to stick shut.
Further investigation finally revealed that some bright spark had previously lubricated the striker socket with a vicious grease which seems to have transformed the rubber bit into black Bostik.
Cleaned out and lubricated with silicone, the operation is now silky smooth.

Chris, it's not "silky smooth", it's "smooth as a zephyrs phart".

I like that, but I'm sure it's not an expression I ever heard in my part of Yorkshire.
In fact I'm sure the only zephyrs ever seen (or heard ;-))
in Yorkshire were made by Ford.

I had forgotten the problem of the exhaust touching the body until I was looking under the door 8)
Today as planned I got in the pit to loosen the engine mounts - and found one was already loose.
Normal.
Undid the other mount and jacked up on one side to try and lower the exhaust on the other side.
To my surprise it seems to have worked, there is little clearance but the exhaust no longer touches so one more idiocy to tick off.

Then a drop of water fell on my head.
Blue water.
I had noticed the coolant level going down a bit but just thought it was being spat out, as can happen.
This seems to be coming from the fuel pump blanking plate, which apparently has been fitted without a gasket
Two questions
Is it normal that there is water in the old petrol pump drive (I've checked and there is none in the oil!) ?
Has anyone a gasket or a bit of gasket paper so I can make one, otherwise I'll have to buy a bottom-end set.

I think you need to look for a different source for the leak - the fuel pump blank might leak oil but never coolant.

Has your engine movement found a weak hose connection?

Yup I agree with Jim.
The fuel pump can only be in contact with the internal block castings, which only contain oil.
On the 2.8 there is the "Transfer" pipe for coolant from the thermostat housing up to the inlet manifold which may just be leaking.
Other than the inlet manifold itself this is the only way that fluid can escape on that side of the engine that I can think of, unless the water is leaking elsewhere and running along before dripping.
I keep the "transfer" pipes in stock, either Very good used or Brand New.

Chris, I have a couple of sheets of gasket paper, how much(roughly) are we talking about? 3" square? :D

Hmm, I can't actually see the leak but it is coming from the general direction of the transfer hose, which looks pretty grotty.
So I'll take one of yours thanks Mark, might as well have a new one.
Let me know how much for PayPal - have you still my address on file?

Ian, thanks but it's not leaking oil (yet) so I'll leave that for the time being.

Hi Chris
You still at 06600?.
Will get carriage cost later today.
The pipe is only £7.
Just putting a clutch kit together for James in Aups, and have sent Ian a set of pads out for his Mini.
