To be honest I wouldn't mess about fitting second hand. From your description Of the ride and the pics, the springs are coil bound and the shocks look to be at a point where it's best to place. I would go for new as you know where they have been and won't end up doing the work twice.

Sorry I don't get the potential bit?
I had the same issues as you on mine (all be it brand new shocks and springs. The springs were weak and short!)
The ride on rough roads was enough to shake your fillings out! On investigation the coils were touching whilst the car was on the ground!

You have heavily sagged springs to the point that they will be bound with any movement of the wheel over the road. And what look to be factory shocks that won't be helping your ride. So rather than spending money and or time on second hand units that are unknown just replace with new?

Small bit of advice I would get a rebuild kit for the trunnions so it's done.

Originally shocks AND springs would have been different between 5 and 6on but I suspect the Club traders may sell one set for all now?

That would be my suspicion too, and I think many cars have probably been fitted with standard generic springs (say 2.25" x 12" x 275 lb/in for example)?

Sorry to drag this back to the start... But are 6b shocks different from 6a (rears) and will the spring from the standard shock fit a Spax?

AFAIK 6a and 6b standard springs are the same. Should fit a spax damper but that depends on the exact type.

Yep, original springs would be 2.5” but the spax could be 2.5” 2.25” or 1.9”

I once had a very hard ride on a front corner of a GTE which turned out to be due to a slightly bent damper spindle and not helped by the trunnion bushes being a bit corroded and stiff (new ownership and prior to my renewing both and fitting grease nipples).
Just a reminder that a lot of spring compressors will not fit because the hooks are too thick to fit between the coils.
Standard springs for GTC were 200 pound inch for a comfortable ride. You may want to upgrade to something slightly stiffer, 250?
Spring seat height adjustable as well as damping adjustable are well worth while having.
Check that the ends of the springs where they are ground flat are parallel. Some springs when fitted may bow out in one direction and you will see that if you put a big screwdriver between the coils at the bottom on the side that is bowing out, and twist it so putting spring loading on that side then the bowing can be made to disappear and the spring becomes strait. Bowing causes side loading on the damper plunger and seal = premature wear.
Remember that the bushes need to be 1 1/8 inches wide and not the 1 1/4 inch wide of the early cars and the spacers fitted inside brackets top and bottom. Mark gtcse8 has new spacers if yours are worn/corroded. The bottom brackets on my GTC are thicker than the top ones so if the spacers are WRONGLY FITTED ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE BRACKETS they do not reach right to the inner face and the inner metal tube of the bush will damage the bracket face and can even sink right into the5/8 hole of the bracket (spacers in brackets put ID back to 1/2 inch).
Insist on the 1 1/8 inch wide bushes......Protech were happy to provide that size for me as was another of the makers.
