It doesn't matter which way the current flows so I joined the two 'inner end wires' and fed power to one outer and earth to the other. But wait till I have spoken to Ricky.

I believe they are supposed to be in parallel on the SE5A that is how it is described on the instructions on the ricky evans website when I bought mine

just looked again as I bought mine a while ago and the web page has changed the diagram is clear enough but it does not refer to the two sides. unlike his previous instructions (back to ricky for clarification I would say)

My Coupe one is the same obviously. So maybe the series connection recommendation was for the Sabre one. As I said I will be double checking.
Maybe the advice has changed on experience or feedback.

Yes do let me know. It could simply be related to screen height. For screens that have a limited depth connecting in series increases the resistance path, hence lowers the current draw and prevents overheating. Not aware myself the difference in height of screens se5a cf sabre (although the difference could be se5 / sabre cf. a more modern car and that the instructions are for the more modern car).

just read the instructions properly this time it does say it should have one relay per side so the two sides are not physically connected together (so not series) for their larger two element screens

That is what I thought earlier. 5 & Coupe = 21.5", Sabre = 16" compared to my BMW which is 32" although a big car is more upright than many more raked moderns.

I think the aspect ratio has something to do with it?

The worst that will happen is that it takes a bit longer to clear the screen if connected in series. Surely better than melting it! SS screens are much closer to modern screens so only have a single pair of connections from memory?

glanced at mine today (still in the packaging) and there's a connection either side - not sure if that's one wire each side or two though?

If you can find out what wattage the elements are designed to safely dissipate then its simple to work out which configuration to wire them in.

I bought a timer relay from a London taxi for Megan 3 - as I won't have a red low coolant relay next to the yellow low fuel relay, I thought this fitted in well :-)

On my 5a screen sitting in the garage there are two pairs wires, one at each lower corner. All are black, have just marked the end of two of them incase I get them mixed up after fitting.
