Sprinting : 195, 205 or 215

Post by MikeyBikey » Fri Apr 03, 2015 9:17 pm

I sprinted with TOYO T1-R's last season and they seem good although they were all second hand.

I can get new in a 15" for 4

195 / 50 : £140
205 / 50 : £202
215 / 45 : £270

So is the extra 1cm worth £62 or 2cm £130

or do i go 1B's ....

One thing to think about is to get the full benefit of 1bs stiffer suspension will be needed
.. Geometry and roll centers become more critical too..

As James says, just bolting 1bs on will only release 50% of their potential and yet gain you all of the extra handicap percentage so its a case of go the whole hog or stick with 1As imho.

As for tyre width, where you running out of grip at one end or tother?
If so,and at the front, lack of rubber is rarely the issue, usually geometry or setup.
If at the rear under acceleration then more rubber width is useful. I wouldve thought 205 fr and 215rr would be ideal but only if you have wheels wide enough. For 205 fronts, the wheels need to be a minimum of 7", but 7.5 or 8 would be my preference. The rears would need to be a minimum of 8" imho, maybe 8.5 or 9" ideally to make the best of the grip available and to chase the 25s ;-)

ok 1B's was just a suggestion.

Losing grip at the front,

will check geometry etc but will take the advice 215 rear / 205 front. Will transfer the 205 from the rear to the front and buy 215 for the rear.

Will 215 go on 6.5 rims

Not p*ssing in the wind, just working out what i've got and I must admit it's all a bit new !!

215s will fit on 6.5" rims but wont be optimal. From a handling point of view 205 would be better on 6.5s imho, although the 215s may h3lp the launch times

I ran 205/50 Toyo's on my SS1 and thought them a good all round tyre on 6.5 rims I think. Yoko Advans A008 also list 1A gave more grip but cost more. You will find tyres loose grip over time as they go through heat cycles on track. Even though you will have plenty of tread after 2 seasons you will notice this.

With your power I doubt you would get back the handicap from going to 1B's.

PS, I need 2 195/55 15 Toyo's for my MR2, where did you get your prices?

I tried 215 r888 on 7" wheels and they looked very bloated. I couldn't even get the wheels on the car as the tyres caught the arches.
