Anglesey 19 April 2009

Post by turbster » Mon Apr 20, 2009 9:02 pm

The second race of the season arrived just two weeks after the first, I've made a few changes to the car including panelling the gaping hole at the rear where the tank originally lives and adjusting my new throttle pedal stop I had to make when fitting the brake bias box the other week.. This is something I forgot to do before Snett, and could be something to do with the straight line speed issue as it was only opening the chokes to 75%

Anyway on to qualifying and amazingly for Anglesey, the sun was out

I got out early and made good use of the clear track, finding a rhythm quickly and getting some good consistent laps in... The result was 4th 2.7 secs off the Lotus 7 in pole with an Elan 26R and a TR6 in front with 3 tenths covering 2nd to 4th. Ben Gough and Iain Daniels were using their new Marcos again and were 6th 1.3 secs behind me and very happy..

I lined up on the grid with Ben right behind me, we both had a plan to go around the outside of the first left hander.

The lights go out and the Elan in front doesn't seem to get away quick, I have to move right to defend from Ben, I follow the Elan and move to his right and we both get a good drive down to the long banked right hander.
The Elan takes the lead with the 7 in second and me in 3rd, the two Lotus' pull away a little and I have mirrors full of an E-Type and the TR6. The first 15 minutes saw the gap to the E-type fluctuating, then I pitted when the window opened at 15 mins, good stop and I came out in traffic which wasn't too bad to clear. I presumed I was pretty much where I was before the pit but I could see the E-type ahead, he must've had a very quick stop :? As the 7 came into view behind me I realised I was second... He caught me pretty quickly and got a better drive out of the banked corner onto the short straight, this leads into a fast right hander where I was able to tuck in behind him onto the long straight, I pulled out to the left and beat him under braking into radar, past :D well for a couple of corners anyway  the marshalls were waving blue flags and in the split second it took me to worry if he was actually lapping me he dived down my inside into Peel and that was the last I saw of him...

So the 7 passes the E-Type and I'm in 3rd, which was my pre race target... I caught the E pretty quickly and set my sights on 2nd only for us to come up on another E to lap him, strangely enough the E was let through and the lapped car then held the line for a lap and a half  meanwhile my 5 second lead on the Elan had become nothing and as I finally passed the lapped E-Type I ran wide and the Elan went through

The next few laps were spent steaming my helmet up with red mist and some powersliding worthy of 70's F1  I attached my self to the rear of the Elan to coincide with the last lap board going up and I knew a better drive off the fast left hander could see me sending one down the inside off the banked corner.... Whoooh that's too early Paul.... 360 degree spin across the track onto the grass followed and that was the end of my podium charge  the spectators appreciated it  .

So I was 4th, 1st in class and Ben and Iain came an impressive 6th and 2nd in class.

I was 2 seconds quicker than last years best, so we're going in the right direction :D

Mallory next in 5 weeks.

More race photos here (not all are Swinging 60's):

I can only see one of Paul in the race, but it says there are more to come... The red Marcos GT #75 is my new race steed shared with Iain Daniels. Not a Reliant, but Paul's mentioned it a couple of times in his reports.

As Paul said, it was a brilliant day on a great track. Once again as I drove only the first half of the race, I got to watch the second half from the pit wall. I got very excited when Paul over took the eventual winning Lotus 7 into rocket under late braking. Paul's times were very consistent too, he got a very brief mention in Motor Sport News too. My stint of the race was spent in constant battles with E-types, particularly one which we ran very close too.

Nice little montage, a good find Paul.

It's got that green E-type that I was hunting down, and then lost out to by messing up the pit stop, doh!
