Donington 16 Sept 2012

Post by turbster » Tue Sep 18, 2012 9:26 pm

As mentioned elsewhere on the forum, I was racing Iain Daniels Sabre Six at Donington at the weekend along with Colin Swinnerton in a SE5a and Iain Daniels and Ben Gough in their Marcos..

After a successful shake down at Curborough I was really looking forward to getting out in the Sabre... With selling my Tuscan last year and deciding to fully rebuild my racing Coupe, I've had a bit of a break from racing. I set my target of a top ten finish :?

Qualifying went well and the Sabre ran perfectly for the full 30 minute session, I felt I was getting up to speed but with 43 cars out there from both Swinging Sixties groups it was busy to say the least!! Considering I never got a clear lap once I'd got up to speed I was more than happy with 11th on the grid...Colin was right behind me in 13th in the GTE and Iain and Ben were up in 7th.

I was really excited when it came to lining up on the dummy grid, I'd lost a bit of enthusiasm in the last few races with the TVR so I was happy it had returned :D.. No problems on the warm up lap and I lined up waiting the lights to go out!! Out they went and the Sabre went off the line with little drama slotting into 9th after having to hold the inside into redgate to halt the progress of a fast starting Elan! I lost a position to another Elan on the second lap and settled into 10th holding onto a group including a TR6 and a Camaro.

By my pitstop on lap 9, I was up to 6th and after a solid stop I came out back in 10th place. after catching an E-Type a 3 lap battle commenced which was fun with his straight line speed cancelling out my greater speed through the corners  after said 3 laps of trying I got up his inside into Coppice with 2 wheels on the grass at the other side of the kerb and this enabled me to stay on his right going down Starkeys straight, he pulled away but I beat him on the brakes and the Esses were mine :D Some tactical driving was required down the pit straight to hold the inside into Redgate and through Hollywood as we went down the Craners he was right behind me, but as I flicked the Sabre to the left the Jag didn't follow, going straight on across the grass  The shine was taken off this a little when I found out I was LAPPING him, even so it was fun!!!

So, I ended up 7th which was also 3rd in class, very, very happy with that, the car was fast and faultless and a testament to Iain's efforts to continually improve all aspects of the Sabres/Scimitars and the straight six engines...

Colin came home in 14th and Iain and Ben were 6th after losing a couple of places running wide at the Old hairpin towards the end which was a shame as a class win was on the cards.

I'll be out at Snetterton next April in my shiny new Coupe and we'll see how that goes!!??

Nice to see Nick and Craig there and hope we put on a decent show for them...results/picture and link to more below.

Paul.

Good to see you too Paul, albeit briefly.
The sabre was flying! Embarrasing some very quick cars. Im sure the new coupe will be very quick and light, cant wait to see it out next season.

It was a good day for £10 :D

Iain and Ben were going well until one of them had a spin at the Old Hairpin

Paul went very well, particularly under braking into the Old Hairpin.

Tried calling you Craig, but missed you. Glad you had a good day to.

If your 5 was anything to go by, the coupe will be not only a fine example but be impressively quick too!

Congrats on the result in the sabre!

Cheers Nick, Phill,

Yea thats the plan for the Coupe, use the ideas from the 5 and try moving it on as I would've done if I'd kept it....and the fine example bit is probably why it's taking so long, I painted it in celulose but wasn't totally happy with it so we've prepped it again and it's going for a blow over in two pack  Craig always said I was a weird hybrid racer/polisher  I have done all the pictures for a project thread, should really get it on here!?

Paul.
