Mallory Park 27 August 2012

Post by CNHSS1 » Mon Aug 27, 2012 9:22 pm

Spent the day at Mallory spectating with future Bro in law. Hes a big F1 fan, so i suggested a classics clubbie at Mallory for fun.
Ex comp sec and SSSC champ Ben Gough and race prep ace Iain 'Danny' Daniels were racing thier Marcos in the Swinging 60s class, along with Colin Swinnerton in the ex John Milligan/Ben Gough SE5 and Gentleman John Leslie in his lovely Sabre 6.
Also the big attraction for me ( other than the banter with Ben & Danny) was the Modsports cars. Baby Bertha was finally showibg some form although Jos Ronchettis Sunbeam Lotus was awesome narrowly beating the huge 7ltr GM big block powered Carlton of Peter Stevens. Great racing and mega cars!

Ben & Danny had qualified 5th but got called up infront of the clerk of the course for a rollicking for coming into the pits running out of fuel via the wrongpit lane entrance in qually so were relegated tolast place on the grid!
Just before the start it began raining--ar5e!
Danny did first stint and went from last to 6th in the first lap, which i have to say was one of the bravest bits of driving ive seen!!! Bit later on the rains came and when he finished his stint to swap with Ben, he dragged them up to 4th.
The track was treacherous and i have to say whilst ive always been impressed by my old sparribg partner Bens pace and aggression, i wasnt confident he would keep the car out of the wall! He pushed andto be fair the marcos looked to be beautifully balanced ( as youd expect of Dannys prep).
2 laps from the end and Ben was 2nd, only to drop back to 3rd witha lap to go. Ben caned the last lap creating many Oohs and Aahs from fellow spectators passed 3rd and powerslid thru the devils elbow much to the commentators delight to cross the line 2nd right up the chuff of the winner.
Great drive chaps, last to 2nd not bad for a couple of ex GTE drivers ;-)
The maiden wins around the corner guys :-)

Just goes to show the RSSOC sprint and hills championship produces fine racers

So, Mr Hughes, you're taking up journalism eh? Or is it to replace a Mr M Walker? Nice report but you really should be trying to beat us bakery truckers!

There's an SE6a racing in Future Classics on Saturday, not sure why it says both days for Swinging Sixties as they're both on Sunday from what I can remember of the timetable? The Sunday race sees a SE5a driven by Colin Swinnerton take on a Sabre Six driven by myself...and Iain Daniels/Ben Gough going for an outright win in their Marcos! So plenty to see with the Motorsports cars too.....

Yeah, be good to catch up mate.... Can't remember seeing John on the entry, I was surprised so maybe I just missed him?? That would be even better to have John racing his Sabre as well 8) Hope I'm not too rusty, over a year since I raced

I just assumed he'd be there. Catch up for a natter in the paddock.
i doubt you'll be that rusty, couple of laps of qually will shake that off, no worries 8)
