Mallory Park 29 August 2011

Post by BigBobPilot » Mon Aug 08, 2011 10:58 pm

The Classic Sports Car Club (CSCC) are running a "Modsport revival" race meeting at Mallory Park on the August bank holiday Monday (29th August). see the links here:

http://www.classicsportscarclub.co.uk/
http://media.vauxhall.co.uk/content/med ... ters_storm

An article about the race is also in the current edition (Sept. 2011) of Octane magazine.

The race will have famous cars like Gerry Marshall's DTV "Baby Bertha" Vauxhall Firenza and it's compatriot cars from the Modsports racing, as well as Super saloons cars. Among this vaunted entry, "Big Bob" will also be racing. Iain Daniel Classic Motorsport is currently preparing this well known Hillclimb, supercharged Scimitar GTE for the race circuit. The main changes will be a more durable set of boots than the Hillclimbing slick tyres and a bigger fuel tank. Otherwise the changes from the Hillclimbing spec. are minimal.

Iain Daniels (aka Danny) will be driving in one 15 minute race and Ben Gough (aka BigBobPilot on this forum) in a second 15 minute race. This will be alongside their 40 minute Swinging 60's race in their double-driven Marcos 3L GT. So if you want to see Big Bob racing in this prestigious event, and plenty of other classic cars too, come along to Mallory Park on 29th August.

Before anyone asks I do not have any spare tickets.

Some interesting cars there 8) . Good luck to Big Bob :D

A couple of other interesting things I spotted:

"Simon Frowen’s 4,000cc Reliant Kitten" - Should be entertaining!

"Dave Tetley’s Stars & Stripes Opel Manta" I saw this car testing at Goodwood earlier in the year, very spectacular with a NASCAR V8, it's the ex-Nick Oatway/Holman Blackburn/Gerry Marshall car and is substantially original (barring obvious mechanical recommisioning) having been found in storage after a long period. Here's a couple of the photos I took of it:

Other cars of note, Tony Sugdens Skoda Cosworth (in fact a couple of skoda silhouettes), a V8 Lotus Esprit (ex Wendy Wools iirc), Dafnee the V8 DAF, Mick Hills Formula 5000 based Beetle V8, at least one V8 Escort, possibly the ex Rod Birley Honda Prelude, a Fiat 500, a few ridiculous Imps/Stillettos, John Clelands old Thundersaloon Carlton and many many more.
Gonna be petrolhead heaven 8) 8)

If you're reading this, Simon, good luck to you as well!

I remember watching a number of those cars "back in the day" :D

Tony Hazlewood's F5000 powered DAF (still owned by him) appeared at our (GRRC) member's open day back in 2007 when he'd just finished restoring it:

yep, saw him run, looked like the V8s left bank gave up, fair bit of smoke....

Danny and Ben went really well in their 40 min Swinging Sixties race in their co-owned Marcos, even with Danny getting attacked by an overly agressive Sunbeam Tiger, think they won their class finished 4th or 5th overall in drying conditions.

Big Bob was entered in 2 of the 3 Modsports races, with the 4th being a very wet demo run.
These races were the highlight of the event, all the other drivers emptying the paddock to watch these evocative cars run.

Danny ran the first race with Bob, a slight missfire restricted their revs to 5,000, so they were down on ultimate power, but it still kept pace with most of the field! a Ford GAA powered Group 5 Capri squeezed Danny and ended up spinning in fornt of him, which Danny did his best to avoid, with only a few gel cracks to show, although it did stick Bob off onto the grass and stalled. Danny soon had it fired up and back on track but a fair bit down thank to the Crapi.
The car handled on rails and without the missfire would have been much further up the grid. The highlight was him outdragging and passing Baby Bertha with ease, and thats with a misfire! Look out guys, Big Bobs a coming... 8)

having spent ages removing the seat and bolting back in to suit Bens somewhat taller frame, the car was ready to go, fingers crossed that the misfire wouldnt get worse or would actually disappear. A precauitionary strip and rebuild of the carb was done, just in case as some tyre rubber had been ingested by the jets on the test day on wednesday.
Bens race was similar, the missfire hampering straight line speed, but the corner speed and braking was mega! Bob was never gonna stay with Pete Stevens Carlton or Simon Wollabys Esprit, but the potential was shown for a front running motor. Not bad for a bread van...

a great day, and if a series appears next year, a must for any petrolhead. Well done CSCC and thanks to Danny (Iain Daniels), Ann and Ben for their time and hospitality 8)

I think Craig has pretty much covered it there. With the Marcos we finished 4th overall & 2nd in class.

The old misfiring problems with Bob came back to haunt us. When it was running well it was competitive. But with the misfire, we had to short shift at 5000rpm which was a big compromise. It's likely to be back out on a race track next year, and the rough plan will be to give the engine a freshen up and fit it with fuel injection & mapped ignition to sort the sparks and fuel once-and-for-all.

As ever, the handling was great and it felt like it was on rails compared to the Marcos, but hen it had a lot more rubber on the road. A little bit of understeer if anything, which I had never experienced with it on Hillclimbs. However, when you backed off the throttle slightly, it would turn straight in again. It was missing a front spoiler (as we ran out of time) so that could have attributed to that.

All said and done it was disappointing that it didn't run smoothly, but it was great fun to have it out on the track after having competed with it on Hillclimbs for so long. We just need to hatch some plans over the winter.

Thanks to everyone who came along to support us. it was a great day, just a bit hectic...

Here's a picture of Danny leading Baby Bertha (until the misfire came in):

I had a shocker all things considered! It was actually the brakes that seized on giving me my main headache... Did have a minor engine issue ('valley' gasket popped for anyone familiar with the Rover V8) but nothing un-sortable!

Also saw a lovely SE5a in the Swinging Sixties which has pretty much made up my mind to keep mine and race-prep it in slow time :)

the yellow 5a used to be raced and owned by Big Bob Pilot and previously to that was owned and sprinted for many years by RSSOC sprint stalwart, John Milligan.

shame about the Kitten, did look at home in the modsports paddock. Hope you get it sorted soon.
