When I plug my phone into my laptop and browse the camera folder on its SD card the files are difficult to sort because the laptop seems to think the folder contains music files not image files.

I want sort the files by "date taken" but this is not an option for the reasons above.

How do I tell Windows that the folder contains image's :?:

Can you go to the View menu and then select Detail?

I Looked into this further last night Peter.

If i plug the phone into the laptop and browse to the camera folder; the folder is setup for music files giving options to sort by for example artist, track no etc.

If I take the SD card out of the phone and plug it directly into the laptop and browse to the folder I am able to say that the folder contains photos and then all the sort options become available such as date taken, focal length etc

I think it has something to do with the way windows treats devices. The phone is not allocated a drive letter when I plug it in its just called Steve's A5. When I plug the SD card in it is allocated a drive letter.

Just not sure which device is controlling what.

I am able to sort the folder by "date created" when I plug the phone in which is fine most of the time. However when you copy/paste or move photos taken earlier into that folder the date created is the date you did that not the date the photo was actually taken. I want to ideally sort by "date taken" in that folder so that photos always display in a logical order on my laptop.

Right click the section where it says artist, track, time etc and a drop down box appears, select the ones you want.

I can't Mike because the options I want relate to Image files and the options its giving me are for Music files like you show above.

When I plug my phone in I don't have the option to customise the SD card Camera folder to say it contains images

just tried my phone, once I'd navigated to the image library on my micro sd card my default setting was thumbnails which I change using top view command, then get the screen shot below, presume you don't get that Steve, can you post what you're seeing perhaps?

First, Right click on the folder icon in the left-hand pane of file explorer, then left-click on "properties" then left click on the "Customise" tab, then select the dropdown "optimise this folder for" and you'll get the options shown below. Change from music to pictures, click on ok to save, and I think you'll be sorted :D

Sometimes windows can be a pain in the plums

Rogers suggestion should work, but sometimes it can throw a wobbler

The problem comes down to the phone software and windows software banging heads

My Xperia Z5 premium (android...with some tasteful modifications to utilise the system power and memory fully)90% of the time will allow Windows to see and organise them as it would like to, but the other 10% is windows attempting to "tell" the phone what to do, and then you get images listed as music, videos listed as unreadable formats and some off the apk files for apps as bootable software (that will crash the system and phone together if you try , I learnt that the hard way!) because the phone software is being stubborn.

With the Sd card out there's no external operating system to clash with, so it's free to sort itself as it sees fit.

Worst comes to worst download the manufacturers phone support software (if available) as that will allow you to edit add delete and move files to your hearts content usually without headaches.

I don't have the option to customise the folder when I plug the phone in.

I'll see if Samsung have some software I can use Tom.

When I have a problem with my phone I usually do a "how to fix etc etc" in the search bar on Youtube. Hope this helps.

Thanks Terry. Gave it a quick try but it comes up with all kinds of stuff on folders when I enter logical search terms. Some of it may be relevant but which bits in amongst that lot is difficult to say.

I installed the Samsung software and that is equally unhelpful as it also displays folder contents in the wrong order which cannot be changed.

I give up for now :)

Looking at that second screenshot I think you have the same issue Mike :?:

Can you customize that folder to sort jpg files in "date taken" not date created/ modified?

I am able to customize a folder on the laptop but not a folder on the phone SD card displayed on the laptop when I plug the phone in.

I think Tom is correct above; windows and phone SW not quite talking the same language :(

Steve, just checked on my office PC, the date modified is actually the date the photo was taken and matches what my camera gallery tells me, the date created for some bizzare reason appears to be the date the item was created, i.e. moved to the current location, in this instance a folder on our server and is 2 days after I took the photo which is correct, weird windoze terminology it seems for some reason, you'd expect the created date to be shot date and modified to be date moved to the computer location, don't know whether that helps at all?

Thanks Mike. I think it helps in that yours is the same as mine and strengthens Tom's argument that its a windows/ Samsung thing.

The "date taken" value never changes even when copied, pasted or moved to another folder. It is a constant stored somewhere within the jpg file.

It's therefore the ideal way of sorting photos into chronological order when you have files copied and moved to a common "photos" folder from other devices.

It's beaten me for now

Thanks for your help all :!:
