Where can I get a mobile phone battery I can trust?

Post by drcdb15 » Tue Mar 17, 2020 6:14 pm

My phone (Alcatel U5) is over 2 years old, the OEM battery is dying, naturally OEM replacements are not available and reputable makers such as Duracell seem only to focus on the high volume models from Samsung and Apple. Getting a battery from eBay or any of several "UK" suppliers that in practice ship from Germany, Hong Kong or China isn't a problem - having even the slightest shred of confidence that I'll get a battery that is actually any good, is.

Is it in fact worth my time trying to find some sort of reputable supplier, or should I just get a cheapo (£9) option off eBay and plan to replace it with another equally useless item in 6 months time, and so on?

Or should I just stick with the OEM battery (not completely dead as such, just lasts less than a day when it used to run for a full day and a night) and start carrying the charger around with me?

Any thoughts?

Thanks :bh

Yes, and I've seen pretty much all of them too!

The issue is, apparently a Li-ion battery ages, and has a shelf life of only 2-3 years at most. So there is little point in buying a "NOS" one. You'll notice the ad you link to doesn't show the reverse side, which is where the manufacturing date is shown. Of course, the Chinese copycat items don't show any date at all usually, but some do and I've seen them as far back as 2015! Of the blue Alcatel ones, the newest I've found is dated 2018, which may explain why the seller in California is offering to send them across the Atlantic all in for under £7...

What I want to find is one I can be sure has only been made within the past few months. A few months on the shelf is fine - but years ??? No.

Buying from Ebay supplier in China in today's problematic times is non viable......I know, I've purchased a high level stop light and delivery time keeps getting put back.....now standing at may 1st!!

Not criticising, as I'm happy to wait.....I actually feel sorry for the suppliers.

I’d get a new phone :D

I’d never heard of Alcatel so I googled the U5:

the battery is removable and sure its trash but if you give it to a little kid its great.

I've owned this phone for a month now, and sometimes the battery drains within 1 hour! The camera is honestly worse than a 2010 phone, it's slow. Not worth it.

I wouldn't give this phone to my dog this has to be the worst phone I have ever owned in my life .

Worst price of sh1t I have ever owned. It was such a price of sh1t I smashed it with a hammer before I had a replacement. It was very satisfying to watch it explode. It didn't even matter that it cost $112.00 at Walmart.

Very poor battery performance. Way too long to charge and way too quick to empty. Fortunately, it was cheap but won't buy it again.

I realise you get what you pay for but I wouldn't have paid for all the stress and frustration had I known what I was in for when I purchased this heap of rubbish.

I paid $99 for this phone and it is the sh1ttest phone I have ever owned. As soon as I hit 15% battery it's completely flat in not even a minute. It resets itself a few times a day and it lags really bad.

After eleven months of constant frustration the phone went into a death spiral, losing its battery charge even as I looked at it on a number of occasions. Enraged by its refusal not to allow any attempt to use it as it recharged I smashed it against a wall and put an end to this farce once and for all. If this is an example of what Alcatel priduces, this company is certain to go out of business - the sooner the better!

In Oz, was on special for $19 at Target many months ago. Got one simply for a backup phone for calls and a select few important apps. WOW!! At $19 it is still $18 more than you should pay. This phone should only be used for calls/sms. Use it for anything else and expect anger levels to rise. This phone is garbage, and it retails still for $99.

Isn’t Alcatel French?

If all you can find is NOS or China specials then I think that tells you something - it’s not worth even aftermarket sales catering for it, let alone the manufacturer.

Yes, but owned by Nokia apparently.

So you have the creator of the infamous 3210 and 3310 with a battery life akin to the half life of Plutonium and then this one which lasts as long as morals in a brothel. Chalk and cheese..

Thanks for all your comments folks, always good to have positive constructive discussion...

With so many defence-related industry folks on here I'm surprised the Alcatel name comes as something new to you. But in fact the phone is Chinese, branded Alcatel under licence from Nokia. So some of those dreadful Chinese kid-on batteries may actually be OEM ...

Get creative - wire a jack socket to the internal battery terminals and stick something decent outside (3 x AA)?? :?
