Hillclimb tyres SS1 1800

Post by Jasper53 » Sun Nov 03, 2019 8:09 pm

Somewhere on here I was advised which tyres were the best for the road class climb regs. Can’t find the post, we are nearly ready to get them ordered. Will be using standard 14 inch rims probably or maybe some spare Mazda ones we have for the Chevette road rally car which are also 14. Any information most gratefully received. Cheers Rob :)

Mazda alloys won't fit the SS1 without serious spacers.

Not sure which list you want to run (1a or 1b)?

Phil H found 1a rainsport 3 in 14" - lots of Classic Marques entrants use them.

Rainsport 3 do seem to be the favoured 1A tyre for Classic Marques - available in 185/55x14 (fine for standard 5.5J alloys) or 195/45x14 (need wider rims as we found out).

Whether or not 1b tyres are worth the penalty is up to you - I think you need a chunk of power to make them pay but aside from Nick Keyser on slicks, all the others who did a full season in CM were running Rainsports 3’s. That probably won’t be the case next season though - but I think the others are getting more power to make up the difference.

I have a set of 195/50/15 Rainsport 3 that will be for sale. They have about 4mm left, so just right for sprinting. New RS3s aren’t at their best unless shaved down to 3-4mm.

I also have three good alloys to go with them. The 4th is bent (fixable) but new ones of the same type are available. new.

We are getting there with ours having started with new ones...but the tread block movement is quite noticeable when they’re fresh.

You need to shave Phil.

Got the new tyres today, look like a race type pattern. We will be using the car on the road so will soon scrub them off a bit. Plenty of lanes round the dales to play on. :D
