Power Run Banzai!

Post by Nick » Sat Mar 17, 2018 2:39 pm

So, manufacturers overstate power, and all engines loose power over time, or so I thought.

So how much power does a 20 year old bog standard 80000 mile Toyota have supposedly having 173 when new (which many considers optimistic), 150? no 178!. Or so Northampton Motor Sport say on their Dyno today. Pretty impressive for a non turbo 2 litre with cat and low octane fuel.

As you can see a very flat torque curve right up to peak power. I suspect the engine would give power up to 7500, but the rev limiter cuts in. Loses at only 14 hp at 5000 revs also impressive.

With total weight (incl me) at a hefty 1275 kgs this means 140 bhp per tonne for Classic Marques, just above a standard SS1 turbo. The SS1 will be better at lower speeds with good torque and gearing, the Toyota probably better at higher speeds. Will be interesting to see.

Other CM members there for runs seem a nice bunch and were very friendly. I still think the top Scim compies will do very well.

Interestingly I worked with two guys who both had mid to late ninties MR2s.

The crap one had a really close ratio gearbox

The really nice one with some sort of factory face lift had ridiculously tall gearing for the rpm it could achieve.. you had to be brutal to the clutch to get it moving!! Once you did, it went very well. It was almost like someone had fitted a diesel diff ratio or something haha.

Glad your all ready to go mate.

Gearing is tall, if I was serious lower profile tyres to lower gearing would make sense. Just out for a bit of fun really. Will need first for Prescott and Curbs!

Tall gearing, peaky engine and heavy car not ideal for hills. Will have to learn Brian's rain dance!

Just arrived back; here is ours. General feeling from the Guys later today was that power is a bit high based on previous Dyno's. I'll let them announce their number :)

Up 8 BHP on my last run (in Cheltenham). Losses 22.3 at peak BHP (23.9 as power started dropping off the end).

More surprisingly, down 11 Kg using exactly the same type of kit.
