Harnesses, seats and HANS devices in roadgoing

Post by turbster » Thu Jul 05, 2018 12:56 pm

Hi all,

I’ve read the regs and guides regarding this and to say it’s a bit vague and contradictory is an understatement! Just wondering what others take on this is, and what you have in that class?

Cheers, Paul.

Harnesses, seats and HANS devices in roadgoing

I think I'm right in saying HANS not mandatory, original or replacement seat ok but must upholstered. Original seat belts acceptable but most fit 75mm 4 point harness which doesnt need to be in date for speed events

Harnesses, seats and HANS devices in roadgoing

That's how I understand it, so that's good.. I don't want to fit a modern bucket seat in the GTE as I know from experience they're just too big without dropping the floor etc. It's predominantly a road car and I want it to stay that way; a pair of period buckets and 4 point harnesses would be my preference so it sounds like I'm back to the trusty neck brace  Having said that I'll see if the HANS works, but it might be worse using that incorrectly than not at all!?

I am running my MR2 in Roadgoing running standard seat and belts without problem. I think you must have headrest if not fitted. I agree a 4 point harness makes sense.

I think Corky uses a HANS in his SS1....ask him for a copy of his risk assessment

I’m using a 3” Sabelt harness and a neck support (not HANS).

My current helmet doesn’t support HANS, but the next one will.

Risk assessment says low likelihood and medium consequence due to speed ....

Harnesses, seats and HANS devices in roadgoing

I have seen some classic mini style bucket seats that do not have a headrest at all ie no hole. is it a case of if the seat had a headrest it must still have one or is it compulsory that only seats with headrests are allowed?

Pretty sure it came in that the seat had to have a head restraint no matter what..
