Tyres

Post by peter freeman » Sat Feb 27, 2016 10:32 am

I have looked at what info I have and can find no ref to the tyre spec for the MB. The car came to me with 205 H winter tyres fitted but for the summer I have a set of 195 Wolfies which I fit. Given the cars top speed I would have expected V rated to be the spec but also as we have a 70mph speed limit how can they say you need V rated tyres fitted. Don't need new tyres just yet but they are coming near to the end of their life - not wear but age.

The speed rating is not just about top speed ie. Autobahn cruising. It is also to do with load and torque. 1500kg of 200HP car accelerating out of a bend for example requires tyres that have sidewall strength and grip - the ability for the rubber to stay mainly on the tyre and not be left all over the road.

By all means put lower speed tyres on your car but fit a speed limiter and drive like an old lady as well!

Nothing wrong with over engineering - Some cars' tyre spec is a higher speed rating than the car is capable of.

Given that the MB is capable of 140plus and the original GTE tyres were rated a lot lower than V's I don't think driving like an old lady comes into the picture.

H rated is 130mph, Peter? V is 149mph from memory and is only one speed rating higher.

I've got V rated on mine - but that might not be sufficient if my estimate is right.

The MB is quoted at 147 mph in one report although it does not sate what the auto does. I've got V rated on the Coupe and the two pointy things but I was not sure what sizes were supposed to be on the MB. I should be able to get Uniroyal rain sports for the MB wheel but still have to decided what to fit with the 7" Wolfies as 14 inch wheels do not have a lot of choice nowadays.

I had an insurance assessor inspect my tyres after an accident to make sure they were of the correct rating for the car.
Odd really since the bus hit my parked car!

I have always stated what tyres are on the car for my insurance quote - generally a better spec than the originals - hence V rated on the Coupe.

Unfortunately you can't buy Rainsport 3 in 15" with a profile greater than 55. I think Rainexpert are available in 60 though.

Checked and you are right - they do a rain expert in 65 V rated though - I have rain expert 60's on the Coupe and like them - http://www.mytyres.co.uk/cgi-bin/rshop. ... p=R-271139

195x65x15 91V on mine.

Have you spoken to George S about the chassis No. specific handbook? If the PO of your car did not purchase it he may still have it.

But he may not be able to remember which box it is in at the moment with the house move! :D

I have not seen the handbooks but have heard about them - if he has it then I would of course want it. No9 of course.
