Fuel Gauge

Postby MBPro1 » Mon Feb 08, 2010 9:10 pm

I am trying to fit a Smiths fuel gauge from a SE6A into my Middlebridge as the original Icknield gauge is no longer available.

The icknield had 3 terminals and 4 wires 2 of which were on the same terminal, the smiths gauge has just 2 terminals so I cannot work out which wire goes where, any suggestions would be most welcome.

Standard Smiths/Lucas gauge wiring is:

One terminal to the output from a 10V regulator (either an original bimetallic strip, or electronic ones off ebay for about £7-8)

The other terminal to the fuel sender.

The above assumes a Smiths compatable sender, i.e. a 6a/b one which provides a variable resistance to ground/earth/chassis (depending on your terminology).

The Smiths guage has a stabilised positive supply to one terminal (from the voltage stabiliser - along with the water temp supply) and the negative (earth) terminal on the other is varied by the sender.

or - wot Phil said :D

OK Good News and Bad News

Good News I found out how to test a fuel gauge with 3 terminals and 4 wires and my gauge is fine :D

Bad News gauge all fitted back in but not working so I will now have to fit the new sender unit to the fuel tank which I have not done before.

If anyone knows how to change the fuel tank sender unit NOW would be a good time to tell me as I hope to attempt it very soon :?

Thanks

make sure that the fuel level is lower than the sender :D

if the MB is the same as a 6b, then it should have a simple retaining collar that you tap round with a copper drift until the lugs meet the gaps?

BTW - what are the terminals on the guage? does it have an integrated low level light?

Michael,

Laurence here, I wonder whether it might be a good idea to extent the wires a bit and try the sender outside the tank first. If the guage works then try and swap the senders over. Might save a lot of hastle if it turns out to be the loom.

Just a tought!

Thank you both for the advise I hope to tackle it later today.

I am told the wires on the MB gauge are S = Sender + = Live and - = Earth but it also has a second live which goes onto the same live terminal and to test it you need a live feed to + terminal and Earth to S terminal (I was putting Live to + and Earth to - and nothing happened)
