Car passed mot, but won't be going back.....

Post by Datsundrew » Tue May 16, 2017 9:57 pm

So our volvo 850 T5 went to a local garage for its mot. I use a few garages for our 6 cars, I dropped one last Jan after being asked why I drove old crap (my Landy s2 which passes most mots in the last 15 years of ownership) and I think I'm done with the next one.
So, last week I check the car over, a few iffy bits , shock gaitors split, a small leak on the steering and rear discs and pads were replaced. The fluid looked horrid so I pumped a couple of litres through to flush it. The car has done 200 odd miles, no fluid lost.
Drop car for mot, notice 2 new staff, hand keys over, and leave. A call later to say that it's failed on the rear calliper..
me- "oh, it was free last week when I had it apart, is it a low reading?
Lad- err, no it works ok, and it's got new discs on the back, but there is a leak where the pipe goes in. It's going to need a new pipe, and maybe calliper if the thread has gone
£75 to do pipe, and £255 +vat if it needs the calliper.
Me- ok, I had it all apart last week, and the pipe and thread all appeared ok, so maybe it just needs nipping up, give that a go first.
Lad....ok, it's on the ramp now, I'll ring you back.
1 hour later, me- How's the volvo doing?
Lad- yer, it's still on the ramp mate, we're trying to find the leak.......
5.30 I go to the garage, no volvo, told to wait in the waiting room, car arrives swiftly into the yard, cooling fans blazing. Lad gets out looking sheepish as he spots me.
I get charged £25 for the 'repairs ' and £45 for the mot.
Now, I've got no issue if it had a leak, I don't mind someone ragging my car, I do mind being treated as if I've no idea what a car is by a teenager! Rant over.

I will add that between me replacing the brakes and the mot, the car did several hundred miles, and it hadn't lost any fluid

Shocking!!
The garage I use (and have done for some years) let me know what's wrong (if there is anything) let me take it away to fix it, added to the they show me any issues and on the off chance that I have had work done they show me the replaced parts. They are really good and understand that I ain't a complete numpty (others would argue otherwise!!) and I am into my cars.

That garage sounds more like Kwik Fit!

I have a local garage just around the corner which I tend to use and the owner has a Bond 3 wheeler which he takes to shows, so hopefully he will understand the Scimitar!

one of my local garages (one I had used for a number of years ) failed my mk3 escort on a few items one of which was welding. I took the car away had all the fails corrected and took it back a month later (during this time it was only in the garage fixing the failures) they had to do a new MOT has the 10 days grace had elapsed. this time a whole new set of fails were produced I questioned it, the pleasant fellow as much as said tough that's the way it is. I left stating he would not see that car again (I have never been back since) took it a few days later to another garage and it passed no advisories (I don't use that garage anymore either due to change of ownership )

A young garage "mechanic" once told my wife that she would soon need replacement brake discs on the rear of her old
Citroen Picasso.

When she informed me of this, I said "Really?...Funny that, as you have brake drums on the rear of your car"!

My usual garage has just closed and Mrs Gillsfans car needed an MOT, I’ve had similar experiences to you guys before so was reluctant to use someone new. On recommendation I took it to a local place and I had the reverse experience to you guys. The garage is run by an old couple (the chap is 75), the car needed the lights adjusting (CHARGED £3.64) and a new tyre. I got a phone call with 3 choices of tyre that I could have that day. When I picked the car up the lovely lady at reception informed me that she didn't do bills on a Friday afternoon and she'd invoice me. Oh and you can buy free range eggs with your MOT :-D

MoT - Ministry of Transport - dodgy places need to be reported.
The motor trade is full of chancers and want-be arfur daleys, all taking their customers for mugs ripe for fleecing.

it's Garages like this that get the Trade a bad name.

Is it against MoT regulations to sell eggs, then?
