Is a Coupe rear bumper the same as the SE5? - again!

Post by David Tew » Wed Feb 21, 2018 6:20 pm

This topic has been much discussed in the past (e.g. viewtopic.php?f=57&t=1237&p=6644#p6644 & viewtopic.php?f=5&t=37733&p=436157&hili ... er#p436157). I've always thought both bumpers were the same but was willing to be proved wrong (which, it seemed, I had).

However, I've just been offered a brand new SE5 rear bumper and thought I'd try it on my Coupe before its final respray. The result is pictured below - it looks a pretty good fit to me!

Out of interest the Reliant part numbers for the rear bumper of both the V6 Coupe and SE5/5A are identical (203220) so perhaps the straight 6 Coupe rear bumper is the one that's different. Does anyone have any idea or is it another Reliant mystery?
:)

have you checked the location holes between the bumper irons and the bumper ?
The Coupe also has in some cases a centre hole too on the underside - poss to do with the number plate lamp ?

Yup, the SE5 bumper is fitted using the Coupe irons. No centre hole but my original bumper didn't have one either.

I can confirm my Straight 6 rear bumper does have a single centre hole as mentioned above. It's been off the car for a long time, so can't think what the hole would be for. The number plate lamp is the same as the V6 and mounted on the body with the wiring going through the body shell.

Last SE5a bumper I fitted a coupe was not only too wide but none of the main holes lined up .
Maybe the SE5 and SE5a bumpers are different?

That's strange. Did you try fitting it to a V6 or S6? Guy says he has the single hole in his bumper so perhaps the S6 bumper is the odd one.

The part numbers for the Coupe and SE5/5A are the same so I don't think that's the issue. It's possible that the later 5As had a different bumper, I suppose.

I'm just glad I found one that fits!

I have a Coupe rear bumper that is " Sorry but WIDER" than my 74 SE5a, will look at the bolt holes later.
I can confirm the SE5a number plate lamp don`t bolt to the bumper as I have and make those mounting brackets.

The V6 bumper is shorter than the 5A bumper - I have both - the turned end of the V6 bumper is also not as deep as the 5A bumper. Don't know about the bumpers fitted to the 5's - I don't have one of them.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Well, there doesn't appear to be a definitive answer; I have an SE5 rear bumper that fits my Coupe and the general consensus is that it can't. I suppose the message to anyone looking for a V6 Coupe rear bumper is to carefully measure before buying and not to completely trust the Reliant parts manuals.

I shall now place my new bumper in the back of the airing cupboard (while my wife isn't looking! ) until I get my car back from being resprayed.

👍

can't comment on the dimensions, but my 5 has the small hole on the lower centre.

David has one of the first 500 SE5, so it has lots of bits not found on later cars.

I have V6 coupe, SE5 and 5a in the workshop so if no-one has confirmed by the next time I get to the workshop, I’ll try my 3 bumpers on each model :D

I have been to my Emporium today and put my 74 SE5a bumper against the Coupe bumper I have.
The Coupe bumper has the elongated hole in the centre and is about 30mm Wider than the 5a.
The mounting holes are a match for each bolt mounting pitch, but spaced the 30mm further apart.
The Coupe unit would probably fit a 5a at a streatch, but the 5a would be just too narrow for a Coupe.

Are you sure Mark? Your pics make it look like the coupe bumper is narrower (which is what I have always understood it to be)?

Jim the front bumper is the Coupe with the centre bolt hole.
The rear one is off my 5a, the second picture shows the "overlap" of the two bumpers together, the bottom pic is the LH Sides evenly set.
