I took the fly off handbrake off my V6 Coupe because the body split and replaced with a GTE one I had spare
Just bend the very thick bracket

I removed the old hand brake and after cleaning found it had second hole as the new hand brake did. The lower hole on the old hand brake had slack in it but the unused upper hole did not. So for now we have the old handbrake lever cleaned up with the turn buckle connected to the upper hole. We'll test how effective this is later in the week.

And today an MoT pass - the needles moved up the gauges satisfactorily when the handbrake was applied on moving rollers and nothing else and broken or deteriorated since the end of March.

Improving hand brake - ideas?

Post by Pepe » Tue Oct 15, 2019 10:10 pm

I dig this out after the years....

Was the solution to improve handbrake force finally to move the handbrake pulley turnbuckle one hole closer to the handbrake pivot?

That would increase the force the hand brake can pull with but increase lever travel significantly I'd assume?

My 5a has the same lever with 2 hole arrangement, turnbuckle and alloy pulley.
On the restoration pictures I can see I used the lower hole at then end of the lever The one with less power and less travel).

As all other Brake HW is new except cable (good condition) and brake backingplates/Handbrake Levers (slight pitting where the pivots meet the brake backing plate) I hope to improve the brakes to a degree I do not need to prelock them on the adjusters prior to a TÜV inspection :)

I use a stainless turnbuckle adjustment (Boat item left hand thread same as the original ) and I had a aluminium pulley wheel made bigger diameter to fill the turnbuckle as the cable came off the smaller one and caused a lot of grief .
it has been a lot better since.
