Exhaust valve ?

Post by Rattling » Sun Sep 15, 2019 7:18 pm

Hi not knowing how to spot a faulty one of the above I seek help :D
As of Friday start the car but it started to make a phut phut noise as if it had a hole in the exhaust at tick over drove around and it got slightly quieter the fast the revs ,no noticeable drop in power/performance or use of oil but the noise is still there and it seem to be coming from the exhaust side ,from what I've looked at there doesn't seem to be any holes in the exhaust system or any fumes/smoke coming out ,but haven't had it up on a ramp, any advice would be well received thanks in advance.

Exhaust valve ?

Exhaust manifold gasket blow seems most likely to me. The manifold heat shield tends to mask the noise at higher revs - acts as a silencer!

Thank for that suggestion I did wonder about that I had a new turbo fitted about two years ago and the manifold refurbished and new gasket fitted , how long do they tend to last? Or is this a piece of string type question :D

Best to remove turbo heat shield then listen with a piece of tubing/garden hose to your ear to decide if there's a leak or not when starting from cold.

The above problem now fixed with a new gasket ! Strangely one of the lower manifold bolts had dropped out and disappeared anyone else had this happen?

The ET is well known for studs pulling out, for some reason they made them all too short - I had to repair a couple when swapping a camshaft too.
