Two optical eyes within the distributor.
Often called, amongst other names, Crank Angle Sensor, CAS.
One "eye" reads TDC, the other eye reads 360 degrees for firing injectors and spark

Love the radio thing, shame it can't be used on these but thank you!

Ok, I haven't taken the crank damper etc. Off but... when the crank damper is aligned to 15° TDC:

Then the cambelt is aligned so:

There is an arrow mark, but I don't believe this is the alignment one:

At the above alignment, the two rocker arms, on no.1 cylinder, can be moved, only about 1mm each but they are not under pressure from valve spring or cam:

Please excuse the oil, I haven't changed it yet...

I'm going to check the alignment on the distributor whilst the cam cover is off.

Can anyone see anything wrong? Any suggestions are gratefully received!

Sorry, photos aren't great but on the second photo you can see the white line is aligned with the punch mark on the top pulley - I am pretty positive the bottom pulley is also aligned and I'm guessing that if the damper and arrow mark up, the top pulley and white line do, and the rockers can also move in this position then the cambelt is ok?

It looks like you have a non-genuine belt (they don’t have the white marks mentioned in the manual). I don’t have my manual to hand but the cam pulley marks don’t look right and the crank needs to be at TDC to set it up.

Crank was at TDC on cylinder 1 on setup. The belt was a Gates kit. There was a white mark alignment for the crank pulley mark and the cam pulley mark.

Although... TDC does seem to be on 15° on the crank damper, i.e at tdc the arrow points at the 15° marker, should it be at 0°?

Sorry, looking on the iPad I can just about make out the white line on the cam mark. If both lines were set against the pulley marks, the valve timing should be okay.

If the crank mark is at 15 deg instead of TDC, I suspect your ignition timing is 15 deg out (one way or the other).

Yes, that's what I suspect... I'm off to read my manual... Thank you, Jim!

I've been re-reading the manual and the top and bottom pulleys are definitely correct (although I can't see the keyway, the unused arrow and punchmarks are in the correct place). I cannot remember if the bottom damper and crankshaft pulley (not the bottom sprocket) can be installed incorrectly or do they have a locator or flat side?

And the marks on the crank pulley (not sure how these can possibly move tbh)?

Is it a damped/bonded pulley? I’m pretty sure the DET ones are so it should follow the ET ones are as well.
