No, he'd blown the gasket between no.s 2 and 3 cylinder (so nothing obvious except the drop in compression). I believe his boost was spiking to something like 19PSI, which made it a tad nippy... :twisted: But, unfortunately, not very long lasting.

Quick update: after Darryl's help I think the leads are now on in the correct order and she is trying to start but not capable of keeping things going even with some throttle. ECU is now showing CAS and AFM... Which is a change from coolant temperature sensor...

Tomorrow I'll try one of the old CAS units and see what happens. No stock of new AFMs now, so if anyone has a known good one or knows where to source one..?

I had to up the idle speed on mine, to test the AFM just unplug it, if it's worse then you know it's likely not AFM, might be worth giving the AFM a clean with brake cleaner

Thank you Darryl, I've cleaned it with contact cleaner (electronic stuff) and I've tried another, but I'm unsure whether either are good...

Round 3: I replaced the CAS again with an old one and, whether I accidentally cleared the ecu (I didn't intentionally and cannot see how it happened) it is now showing only code 44 - correct operation. However, she's still not starting.

The oddest thing, and whether anyone has seen this before, is that when trying to start you can see that the overboost safety valve, on top of the inlet manifold, is blowing out excess air?

Any ideas what to try next?

No, it does have an old switch on the side of the steering cowl, which I have no idea what it is for but no alarm or immobiliser to my knowledge.

When I bought it she was running fine, if in need of some TLC and I changed the distributor cap, plugs, HT leads and rotor arm and she then wouldn't start. I had possibly connected the HT leads in a clockwise direction though. I changed the coil and the Darlington pair thingy (brain melt, can't remember its correct name) and she started up but was running rough (possibly due to the incorrect placement of HT leads.

I changed the cam belt (90% sure that the timing is correct because everything lines up) and she was still running rough. But this, again, was probably due to the HT lead placement.

Last week, after doing a lot of work on suspension and replacing the fuel lines etc. She started up but still rough so I changed the CAS and she sounded much better. Then... She started revving up to 3k without any throttle so I turned the engine off and she now won't start... Changed the CAS to one of Mark's and the HT leads should be correct now. There is fuel and a spark but she won't catch. If you use the throttle she will try to catch but just dies...

Oh, and whether this has any bearing: I did change the vacuum pipe, because it looked rough, with some fuel hose and fuel clamps, but I didn't think this would make a deal of difference?

The emergency overboost valve puffing when trying to turn her over does give me some concern...

I don’t recall seeing them moving..in normal operation, any way.

I made a video but cannot see how to post it, it is basically backfiring through the emergency boost valve, you hear a bang and can see a small amount of flame...

Sounds like your valve timing is out to me?
