Stuck bonnet and ignition

Hi all

What's the best way to release a stuck bonnet?
I've just read the recent thread re adjusting the cable, but that involves opening the bonnet and I can't. I have tried pulling the release lever as hard as I dare, don't want to break anything and make a bigger mess. The passenger side catch has released but not the drivers side.

Trying to get in because my ignition/ charging has been playing up over the last few weeks.

Symptoms:
When I turn on ignition sometimes the red light comes on, sometimes not. The brake warning and coolant lights stopped working at the same time. No pattern that I can see.
Sometimes when light on at start up its off when I switch off.
Sometimes when light off at start up it comes on when I switch off.

On the occasions the ignition light comes on the brake and coolant lights still don't light.

Been like this for a few weeks, I have just carried on driving, but with jump leads and a spare charged battery in the boot. Never had to use them.

This morning it has developed a new trick, the ignition light stays on even when the ignition is off and keys are in my pocket. Might have been on when I started her, didn't notice. After a few miles driving what was a charged battery is now too flat to turn the engine at any speed.

Was going to charge battery and have another look at the wiring / alternator but now I can't get under the bonnet.

Given up for a think for a bit.

Any thoughts on either problem?

Sounds like a fault with the instrument cluster PCB or possibly the connectors to it?

To release the bonnet catch you need to access the pivot located under here

Much easier with the dash off despite what some may think :D

You can see the cable from the handle and the two rods going to the catches.

That happened a few times on Kirsty, but NS jamming when OS released.
I found it would release if I parked the car on slightly different levels at front between OS and NS. Must have been due to flexing a slight twist on the chassis. Sounds a bit weird and may not work for you, but possibly worth a try. (You might get the same effect by jacking up one or other of the front corners.)

Before you look at anything else 're the bonnet, just try getting a friend to press down on the bonnet (both sides) whilst pulling the release. It often helps a sticking catch!

Thanks, Sounds a simple thing, so worth a try before anything more complicated.
My son is calling this evening, he's a big lad so I'll get him to do the pressing down.

Just tell him to go gently whilst you feel the lever, it may just be the strength of the spring catch preventing the lever mechanism working and this is all that needs relieving. I've managed this on many jammed bonnets and boot lids. Hope it works for you!

Make sure the catches are bolted in tight too as the movement sometimes can cause a opening problem

To avoid said issue replaced the bolts with allen headed fasteners so i could get EXTRA purchase on them to tighten (and added star washers) to avoid the catches moving, started with them at FULL height then slowly reduced to get panel gaps tiddly (er) :wink:
