Failing to stop sounds like an issue with the parking switch?

If it doesn't stop moving when in "off" position, that'll be the park switch.

I've had my dash off today and did the same. Took it out, gave it a spin, now working fine. Definitely needs keeping an eye on, but actually removing the dash isn't as difficult as I dreaded

Also removed all of the dim-dip spaghetti plus relay which I'm quite glad to get out of the way.

What about the grease in the motor gearbox? It's almost certainly 30+ years old, so well worth cleaning it out and replacing with new? Could explain why it started working again after removing the lid and spinning it? (doesn't explain the not stopping though, see above)

Yes, gave the gearbox a good clean out and added new grease. Same at spindle end.

Is there a way to test the park switch with the unit removed from the car? I tried power to the 'live' and 'park' terminals (with 'earth' earthed) but nothing - I assume it should run then stop when it reaches the 'parked' position.

If it is the park switch, what's the solution? Do I just replace the whole wiper unit?

Agreed, and wiper motor removal wasn't too bad either.

Ford, did your wiper motor have these connectors on it? These were all attached to my motor body (the cylindrical part) via one of the long, narrow bolts. They all come from the connector block (also in the photo) - the round one is from the earth connection, and the other 2 wires were from (I think) the slow and fast speed connections. So the earth, slow and fast connections all have 2 wires connected. The incoming feed wires, and the outgoing wires pictured.

Are these standard? Anyone shed any light?

(BTW, new park switch ordered this evening.)

It did yes, I think they're capacitors that store enough charge to park the wiper after power is removed. Seperate ones for slow and fast

They’re suppressors for the radio. The permenant feed supplies the park function.

It was indeed the park switch. Just a note for anyone else needing to replace it - try and get the genuine Lucas part (which is WHB101 by the way). The first one I ordered (from ebay) was of very poor quality. Cheap plastic, didn't even seem to fit together properly. And when trying to fit, it broke.
