ISH! The spindle is a slightly different length on the Chevette offering. It makes the steering wheel rub on the surround. I was looking round for a different u/j to take up the difference, until I put a Reliant one back on.

I have a Chevette and a Reliant one available for sale if anyone needs one.

Isn't the bog-standard chevette one slightly lower-geared than the original standard SS1 one? I choose my words carefully because what your car has now may not be what it had when it left the factory :)

There are slight differences in the (at least) 2 variants - and pinion length is the difference. This was also a change on the Small Sports at some point - Sabres have one type and early SS has another but I have no idea when the change is (although I think a change in the casing is the key?).

Yes, Roger - Chevette is 2.9 turns vs SS 2.7 turns, IIRC.

Chevette is more like 3.5 turns in my experience.
Can be fitted but you will need to max the ajustment of all slip joints in the column etc.

Oh and perhaps take a dotary sanding disc to teh back of the wheel quickly! YOu may scorn, but seriously, not visible, and does the job of giving you enough clearance for a squeak free column shroud

3.5t chevette vs 2.9t ss1.

I haven't checked back to back, but im pretty certain chevette has tad more lock (few mm)

Chevette definately has more lock. Also steel bushes at either end instead of plain aluminium housing. Better quality build in my view.

Dismantle the flexible joint used on the SS1/Sabre, insert another rubber disc and re assemble. This makes up the extra length required for the Chevette rack.

i was looking into using a golf mk1 rack, they look very close........hmm, the pinion is different length [sorted] and dia. [sorted] the pinion is a slightly different angle,[ not sorted but easy, i think] the mount rubbers are very slightly different, [off the shelf, cobra 8) ] but i will get it to fit, once it warms up.

Dragging this up from the depths as I've done some measuring and comparisons today which will follow shortly.

Could someone else out there with a Chevette rack carefully count the turns lock to lock with it on the bench.
The one I have comes up at 4.2 turns and I have no reason to think it is anything other than common Chevette spec, but would like it confirmed!

KAB definitely has a shovit rack - coz I removed it in the scrappies and fitted it about 15 years ago! I have half a dozen or so racks fitted/unfitted I can check - all ss1 AFAIK (139-982) but there may be a Sabre one in there if BFD came with one?

Stew B had the rack rebuilt on L320 BFD, but thought it was original. Will check at the weekend RR
