Brass fuel tube thingy... Any ideas what it is?

I think I've found what it is (despite the difference in external material, this being stainless). It supposedly allows the car to run on unleaded... I am sure the TI was designed to deal with unleaded anyway (there being the twin plug, catalyst version). Surely a snake oil device, despite being "...DESIGNED IN ITS ORIGINAL FORM. FOR THE R.A.F. IN 1941 TO COMBAT POOR QUALITY FUEL..."? ;)

Here's my version of the brass tube thingy, suitably mounted for display/awards ceremonies etc:

Actually, the other side is a clue to what this is:

It's a boiler thermometer in its protective sleeve. I have a steam pressure relief valve somewhere too, but it's not as interesting to look at.

Won't fit on the Sabre Six either!! :(

Surely you could mount it on the dash? I love things like that, I have too may bits and pieces and people think you are a little odd when they find you playing with a '60s Geiger counter...

My Missus already complains about the temperature in the cabin (too high, that is) so giving her something to read what it actually is, would be a rod for my own back, so to speak.
If I had a tidy garage I could mount it on a panel and then explain to myself why it is too cold to work on stuff! :?

Is it clearly readable? Couldn't you confuddle her with technology? Although I do like the idea of saying: it's too cold to work on Reliant suspension...
