I think Mark Wilson aka gtcse8 produced some of these discs, not sure what the donor disc was and what machining work he had to do. It might be worth dropping him a pm and asking him if he has any for sale.

No they're the same hubs across the SS range. I understand that years ago there was some confusion of the spec' of a new Sabre (that never happened), and parts books were updated accordingly. The hang over from this is that many parts books now quote the wrong brake parts (ie. MG Metro).

The only discs that fit are the ones from GW, QRG or RPW. They are exclusive to the small sports range and are not taken from anything else of the era. However the vented disc conversion that GW sell, uses an MG Metro caliper and a modified BL/Rover/MG disc of some description.

the problem is that Reliant fitted the discs BEHIND the hub, for most companies the disc is bolted on (or held on with wheels) to OUTSIDE of hub.

so in Reliant's case you have to remove the hub to swap the disc, therefore , no idea what the base disc would be, the QRG / GW vented /big-brake-upgrade setup was a bit of a special AFAIK

no idea what the thinking for the disc on behind hub was, probably to do with offset and clearance for the calipers? ? ? ? I suppose I could reason it out but I just accept the fact that it is a real PITA to change out a front disc :( (and pay handsomely for a new disc , if they are still available?)

and note that if you are thinking of buying metro calipers for your sabre/SS1 then the NEAR side Metro fits the OFF side reliant. Metro brake calipers are fitted in front of the axle, Reliant behind it. all due to location of steering rack, front wheel drive it's 'usually' behind engine/gear-box but with SS1 the engine is set well aft, but not aft enough to allow the rack to sit behind axle . . . . .. .

Standard calipers are metro (non turbo). Standard discs are bespoke

Club traders offer a vented disc setup - metro turbo calipers (or simply metro calipers spaced out) and more bespoke discs. Spacers and extended studs used to be supplied with the complete kit, not sure if they are still?

Phil Howard developed an alternative setup many years ago using chevette uprights (now rare), Carlton discs (now rare) and Volvo 240 calipers (now rare) :D

There are other setups from Peugeot to Porsche and obviously Wildwood, but those are the main ones.

Disc behind hub used to be normal practice for most manufacturers - AFAIK the move towards disc outside hub is a relatively recent thing, undoubtedly in part due to convenience, but partly I suspect, due to the fact that since the banning of asbestos, pads seem to have become more "aggressive" and discs have almost become a service item, so they are being changed more often.

OK fairy snuf,
I'd only ever worked on older stuff , J2, 444, Victor, Mk 1 Cortina, Hunter when at school and then own cars when left uni, ie Reliant Regal / Robin with drums and then onto FWD so unsure if was a thing with FWD vs RWD or Reliant

I got plenty of Vented Discs in stock.

They are a direct replacement on the Reliant hubs.

You will need the wider spaced caliper, or I can supply.

Cheers Steve for the endorsement, I have supplied a good few sets now and intend machining as many discs as I can afford to so as to keep this conversion practical and far cheaper than other conversions.

My setup does not need wheel spacer or other jiggery pokery assuming the calipers are set up/spaced correctly

Pretty sure that the metro turbo calipers (or spaced metro calipers) can rub slightly on the standard wheels Mark - I fitted spacers to correct for offset on my wider wheels but GW provided spacers and studs with the full kits back in the day?

Unless the offset of the disc requires the caliper to be spaced off from the upright mountings this bringing it back behind the hub face line.

Otherwise yes. Wider caliper mounted as standard will result in wheel clearance issues.
