Will at some point be fitting a vented disc conversion for the SST 1.8 ti 1990. Graham walker Volvo calipers and think Vauxhall Carlton discs. Brought with car what model Carlton engine size and year do i have to look out for as discs do not last forever. Do they need any machining doing to them ? going to a auto jumble before they will be fitted and can pick up a spare set there hopefully. I am going to replace the rear brake cylinders with QH bwc 3255 new and 19 mm diameter to improve balance. Replace rear brake shoes with new ones. What make would people recommend as the best. I can only find TRW 90701 RTGBS 6017 shoes Ferodo FSB 164 shoes that the suppliers web site says will fit They say Mintex MFR 122 or MLR 5 do not fit also Delphi 1249 or 1415 do not fit also Borg and Beck BBS 6247 they say do not fit. I know the rear brakes are cheap and i am not in a hurry to fit them but i want to get the correct ones. Last of all with all the rain we have been having at the moment. I checked the lights and the drivers side light was about a quarter full of water. Would i be right in thinking that they are 7 inch halogen the lights on it are made bye Wipac. Are they the same as land rover one's. Found a pair Wipac S4694B just lights and bulbs no metal rings will the ones on the car refit over on internet would these be the correct ones or do the job.

Thank you

You need to determine exactly what you have fitted - you've mixed two types of front disc upgrade there, the GW setup and the PH (Phil Howard) setup :D

I've just written this in answer to another post:

Standard calipers are metro (non turbo). Standard discs are bespoke

Club traders offer a vented disc setup - metro turbo calipers (or simply metro calipers spaced out) and more bespoke discs. Spacers and extended studs used to be supplied with the complete kit, not sure if they are still?

Phil Howard developed an alternative setup many years ago using chevette uprights (now rare), Carlton discs (now rare) and Volvo 240 calipers (now rare) :D

There are other setups from Peugeot to Porsche and obviously Wildwood, but those are the main ones.

In response to PM, links here for future reference:

PH vented disc conversion here

Small sports rear brake shoes are 203x38mm from the Escort, not the 178x32. Ferodo Part Number is FSB164, so google cross references.

Be careful with headlights, some are deeper than others.

With regard to the brake kit I sold to Andrew with car perhaps this will guide those who wish to help him through the fitment etc. This kit was purchased from Andy Luckman quite q few years ago during the early years of my ownership which I had then stored in the garage fro an 'as & when' fitment. According to Andy it was a Graham Walker kit that was then surplus to his requirements. It consisted of new 2 new discs one of which was fitted to a hub. Andy had also supplied the other hub which need to be fitted with the other new disc. There were 2 calipers which appeared to be exchange units. Along with this were EBC pads complete with the pressure plates to fit in the calipers and a set of split pins to suit. Also Andy had included 4 spacers which I assume weer for ensuring correct wheel clearance. Hope all the above helps.

Best reagrsd to all

With regard to the headlight units I had replaced a few years ago they were shallow Wipac units.

As to water ingress had no idea this had occurred. Did have same problem with the last Sabre I had and cured it by drilling a couple of small 'drain' holes in the bottom of the reflector.

front disc conversion sound like a full GW setup - checking disc diameter will quickly answer the Q.
