XJS electric mirrors wiring

Post by ard126k » Thu Jul 27, 2017 11:50 am

Morning all

I would like to fit the XJS electric mirrors to my GTC. There are a pair on a popular auction site at the moment but I don't want to splash the cash until I'm sure they can be made to work with the GTC wiring. The mirror I have at the moment is the Lotus Esprit style which uses electromagnets to move the shiny bit. The wiring has an earth wire and 4 others, each one gets a voltage depending on how the dash switch is moved. I imagine that the XJS mirrors use motors, which will need the voltage reversed to move in opposite ways (maybe?) As you can see I'm floundering a bit so some encouragement from anyone who's done this would be very welcome!

Alex.

I think the XJS uses 4 wires - a pair for each motor which simply swap polarity to reverse direction?

Yes they do. One from each is commoned in the standard circuit. There is an article on here with the instuctions somewhere, I think it is one of mine, using the common Ford switch.

When I restored no.404, I just left the original switches in place on the dashboard, but tucked an XJS double switch unit into the centre console box. I tried using a ford switch, but somehow managed to blow three of them, so just went for the proper Jag switches.

So I can take it that the Jag mirrors won't work with the GTC's joystick but need a Jag or Ford switch? (Sorry for density)

Alex.

I don't actually know. Have a look at the 6b wiring diagram and see how it is wired. You could also test Voltages at the mirror end. My inclination is that it will work in the same way as the Ford switch. I didn't bother testing with an original switch because the Ford one is much nicer.

yes i had a GTC that had XJSs mirrors using the ford switch BUT there was a little plastic box attached to the wiring just behind the switch curiosity got the better of me while i restored it. I opened it up and there was a small circuit board with all sorts of electrickery on it.... quietly closed it as it was working fine. Car is now on the continent so i can't get pics. The ford switch fitted is quite expensive to replace so i would take advice from an automotive spark before using it.

The Ford switch was fitted to many vehicles, Ford, Middlebridge and even Citroen! They are freely available for a fiver upwards, but if buying, look for one with a short length of cable loom attached, otherwise it will be difficult to connect.

Yes it is. There is also a version with a squarer bezel.
