SE6a Wiper "Wheel Boxes"

Post by MickP » Sat Jan 30, 2010 11:31 am

Would anyone happen to know for sure what the Lucas part numbers are for, or even the number of teeth there are on the two different wheel boxes (if that is what they are called) for the wipers on the SE6a models?

Wipers are the next item on the very much in need of refurbishment list. New motor fitted, supply good but wipers still not up to it. When you pull and push the cable by hand they move but do not feel very good, even with the wiper arms removed. Cable has been well greased etc. and looks OK.

I do not want to dismantle it all without having new parts to fit.

Any help or comments very welcome.

Michael.

Don't know the numbers offhand, but it's worth noting that the two are different, so if you get them the wrong way round, or two the same, you'll get odd sweeps.

cheers,

Further, the Reliant part nos are:

R/H.......211955
L/H.......211956

Might help to track them down.

cheers,

Thanks Roger,

I have the Reliant part numbers but can't find a cross reference to the Lucas numbers. There are ones on ebay but they don't say which side they are for or the gearing etc. At this time of year I do not want to take it to bits just to not have the parts to fix it.

I will keep looking on the net etc and see what I can find.

Thanks,
Michael.

Well of course the other approach is that I'm pretty sure I've seen on GW's stand at Curborough over the last few years, boxes of the things. You could give them a call and see what they've got.

cheers,

If anyone will know you would expect it to be GWs. I may just get in touch with them and give the part numbers - and see what price they come up with! :) :(

Almost £70 for the pair of wiper wheel boxes inc. VAT and Delivery. :?

Other options to be explored!

Mickp,
Hi, these are Lucas Wheel Boxes and are/were readily available up until a few years ago although they can sometimes still be found for reasonable money. The Lucas Parts numbers are :-

Passenger side - 72930A (40T) or 72910 (from a Sherpa Freight Rover) or an equivalent box
Driver's Side - 72929A (32T) or 72872 or an equivalent box
Rear Box - 72866A or an equivalent box

Please ensure that you check these numbers with the Lucas employees as they will be able to cross reference and give very specific technical advice.
The very best of luck to you (and maybe all those other people who may go direct to Lucas and obtain the aforestaed items at a good price. Oh, by the way I already have a stock of these for SE5/5a & SE6/6a in "Alladin's Cave".
Regards,
Viv

MOD EDIT - Keep it clean, please Viv..

Thank you very much Viv - looks like you speak the same language as me!

The stock in the cave - do any of these items move in exchange for hard cash or are they a stash for future use when other sources have dried up? (something I am doing myself).

Michael.

Michael,
I would have to check but I think my current stock is just a complete set each for my 72 5a and Tina's 80 6a for when I need to replace them someday however I will check tomorrow and get back to you asap if I have any extra spares (ie. I've been out there a few times today and got frozen - enough's enough for one day !!!). If your current ones are in good working order now then a damn good clean and regrease will see them last a good few years. I have misplaced my main 'Alterparts' book with many many handwritten details handwritten in and am having to use/combine another two tatty 'Alterparts' books to get my info at the moment but I'm sure it'll turn up at some inopportune moment !
To be fair to the Trader's I have absolutely no idea what current price you will get charged direct and it will be interesting to get some feedback on this thread.
Regards,
Viv

Can anybody confirm this at all. As in, with the bewildering amount of conflicting information available on the internet, I'm hesitant to press the 'buy' button on anything :(

Has anyone purchased and fitted wheelboxes from a currently available line of stock?

I've found the wheelboxes that Viv quotes:
72910 Passenger side 40 teeth http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/lucas-72910-wheel ... _500wt_922
72872 Drivers side 32 teeth http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/lucas-NOS-72872-w ... _500wt_922

Or there's this http://www.ukclassicparts.com/products/ ... el-box.asp which is cheaper but they don't have the 40 tooth version!

But there's no rubber bushes etc to go with them and I can't find them anywhere

This is interesting.. http://www.s-v-c.co.uk/prod_wipers.html scroll down about a 1/3 of the page and it says this: Wheelboxes
Including inner spacer, gasket, chrome plated outer bezel & chrome nut. 32 & 40 tooth gear wheel. 2 ½ inch drive shaft. they're £20 each. I'll call them on monday and post up the response :)

Best, Dan

If you come across the correct one or a very close fit and you find the correct bezel as in the photo of my crusty one. Let us know please. I've been looking the bezels for some time with no luck.

I have emailed the seller Terry as he also sells Scimitar wheel boxes and asked if any of his bezel and gasket kits fit.
