Essex head gasket failed?

Post by Stornoway Grey » Mon Sep 09, 2019 4:48 pm

There are exhaust gases in the cooling system so the head gasket is almost certainly on the way out and I am going to bite the bullet and replace the head gaskets and water pump. I would appreciate the benefit of other experience with regard to sourcing the parts - I am not sure if all gaskets are created equal, and I prefer to get the best quality if possible. Do people tend to use Burton, or the club traders? "Gaskets for classics" on ebay seems to be half the price, anyone had experience with them? Thanks in advance,
Adam

Also, can anyone give me an estimate of time taken to replace the head gaskets please so I can estimate costs? Will it be more than a day (for a garage that is)?

I wouldn't touch a head gasket from "gaskets for Classics" - Burtons, QRG and GW all sell Reinz AFAIK.

Shouldn't take more than a day for a garage to replace both HG - Steve (Rev Light) and I did one last week in a few hours with plenty of coffee breaks, cleaning up of bits and discussions :)

Regarding heater tanks & Expansion bottles, I have been wondering about repacing my plastic expansion bottle with an alloy Expansion tank plumbed into the the bottom heater hose. The objective being to reduce/ eliminate water loss with (effectively) a larger radiator top tank. After all this is how all modern cars do it. Would it be beneficial?

I'd also comment that although I do not believe my car is overheating it definitely (not only the guage but also one of those remote infrared sensning digital testers) runs hotter in hotter weather and on occasion I too get a bubbling sound from the plastic expansion bottle

I also thought about this too. the old plastic bottle is pretty grotty.

according to the google machine it needs a capacity of 2.16L based on a 12L cooling system capacity.

Essex head gasket failed?

I saw an SE6A at a local car show recently with an alloy coolant expansion tank. It looked very neat and had a clear plastic sight tube so you can see the coolant level without needing to squint in through the cap. The owner fitted it a couple of years ago and seemed pleased with it.

Search eBay for item number 332596388805, for example.

I looked at those but was unsure whether it was a header tank or an expansion tank. In the end I bought another cheapo item 321417918816 which definitely has a pressure cap 2.5 Litres but no sight tube. Not fitted it yet though....
I'm just wondering whether it will help anything
