Got a strange one...

The standard mechanical fuel pump was removed from a known good engine and used in one that I have just replaced the cam in. Initially (as per the original fit) I had no insulator gasket fitted and got no fuel delivery. I took it out and operated the lever a couple of times and got good delivery. I put it back with an insulation spacer and still no operation. I was careful to get the lever upwards during fitting.

The cam was refitted correctly with the fuel pump eccentric mounted!

Anything obvious I am missing?

They can be sensitive to insulation spacer thickness.

The fuel pumps come with a variety of arm lengths - sounds like yours is too short

I just measured the length of the arm on a known working one, and it's 11cm long

The other thing about that type of fuel pump is that if the engine is fitted with an alloy timing wheel, it can touch. Making an awful racket. I changed mine to a fule pump with a slimmer cast leg. Which has been working fine.

Got it sorted. No matter what I did, there was no pumping so resorted to filling the float bowl, starting the engine and feeling for the cam eccentric with the pump lever. Once the pump was bobbing away I nipped it up with the thin gasket. Never had one play me up like that before and I have done a lot!

Glad you got it done I’d had exactly the same issue a couple of months ago but chickened out and put a facet pump and filter king on plus a proper blanking plate (all from burtons)
