B post out of reach

Hello
On the GTC, the clamping plates which are supposed to hold the hardtop to the B post don't seem to be long enough to reach the post, so the top doesn't fit close to the body. The top won't go any further forward, the windscreen clamps are done up tight, so I suppose the answer is to make longer plates. Has anyone else had this problem?

Alex.

PS the plates are about 3" long, would that be about right?

3" sounds right :D
But, they are pretty useless I'm afraid. I found one had fallen off of its own accord over winter
To be fair, it's not so much the bracket as the knurled bolt that's at fault. It needs to be a much bigger course thread.

The bracket should be slotted and just about sits over the b-pillar lip to hold it in.

I'm not sure of anyone has produced a better solution?

Guy

Just as an update - since I've stripped the hardtop to refurbish it I thought I'd have a look at the threads inside the B pillar (is that the right name for them on a hardtop?)
I made a 1" hole in the outside of the pillar and found a nut glassed in (one was loose, to add to the fun) but the main trouble was that the threads were full of resin which was stopping the thumbscrew going all the way in. The thread is 1/4" UNF and a tap soon cleared them out. I'll see if I can find a longer screw to help with security, although it doesn't help with the short plate of course....

Good afternoon Alex,
Yep, the clips are rubbish - I have had to have new Stainless steel ones made, one side was fab fitting, the other side was a year and a day out, but, they are hand built cars and this is all part of the fun :D :D

Re Tapped all mine in 5/16 UNC when the poxy 1/4 UNF threads failed, and now use hex head LARGE custom made bolt.
Also bent the B frame slotted plates inwards so they pull the HT B post into the car.
As Rob says they are not the most accurate of fixings.

I can supply modified slotted plates if anyone needs them?.

I'll have a pair once I put the HT back on (when winter comes, although how I'm going to tell I'm not sure) and measured how long they need to be.
