Cologne engine 'running on'

That's the one
Apart from the fact that whatever the garage did to the choke makes it almost impossible to adjust, I am back on course with the restoration project.
Next step, cut down the passenger door so it fits in the frame, I think Reliant got confused between centimetres and inches.

Regarding timing, factory settings are not always accurate as every engine has different needs. I used to build engines and always advanced the timing until the engine pinked then knocked it back a little till it didn't. Retarded ignition causes run on as the exhaust valves get very hot, advance it up and give it a try, as long as it doesn't pink under load then its fine, BMC engines would be out by as much as 2 or 3 degrees because of wear in timing chain etc, Different engine I know but if you set that at factory static then timing would be retarded.
Best with a used engine to give it what it needs rather than what the factory says it should have, I used to modify dizzys using different springs and altering advance settings so I do know a little about timing :D

If you still have your old plugs, try running on them; there have been reports of poor quality "Chinese copies" of spark plugs hitting the market, but I don't know if this is true.
Here's an interesting picture I found last night; might be useful to help with your diagnosis:

Not all that helpful - Morrisons petrol turned my plugs red - don't use their petrol now as they don't do super anyway.

Something worth checking is that the vac advance is working, it can stick if the engine has been stood at all and the timing will be retarded on all but full throttle.
