Sunroofs - how many different factory types?

Post by rebel alliance » Fri Dec 23, 2016 8:16 pm

I've had Webasto folding, Electric slide and the awful tilt glass type over the years in my Scimitars.

Recently bought another, this time a black on black Scimitar/M that was hidden for 20 years that has a solid sliding roof that looks original fitment that I've never seen before.
The internal steel surround has turned to dust with rust, It is about the same size as the webasto on the outside with only the sliding portion seen inside. The interior headcloth is as you'd expect is poor condition due to rain ingress but what was fitted looks professionally fitted - Shame it has deteriorated because at one time the car was a beauty.

Just wondering how many different factory fitted roofs were fitted over the years ?

That one must have been an option on the later 6a's as i have one with it fitted, seen a few others over the years not sure on the make.

AFAIK none of the Webasto were factory fits in the GTE, but popular dealer options (I don't think they appear in any parts manuals) - although there may be a 6 series sales brochure that lists the Hollandia?

I see, so the dealership would fit them in after they received them?

Who knows, the sunroof business was big in the 70s with agencies all over so as well as being dealer fitted they could have been fitted at any stage in the early life of the car.
I am ashamed to say I had a pop up roof fitted to a car I had in the 80s (not a Scim) ,however Webastos and other "proper" sunroofs are an asset to any car without A/C.

It would be interesting to find out if any of the ex-employees or dealers know. I seem to remember hearing that the metal sliding version was a factory option on the coupe?

The Hollandia is listed as an option in this 1979 sales brochure

and there are two versions of the 6b/GTC brochure - one lists the Hollandia,

the other says Hollandia tilt & slide electric or manual.

I owned a coupe HND 88E many moons ago, and that had the solid sliding panel described by Jim. It appeared to be factory fitted.

My SE5 and 6a both had a Tudor Webasto which may have been fitted after leaving the factory, however a 6b fitted with an electric version did come from the factory with it.

In 1976 a local Scimitar told me that the Webasto folding sunroof was not a factory option to any GTE but an arrangement between a dealer and a local Webasto agent. Given the complexity of fitting this type of roof (including cutting and bracketing the roll tubes and fitting a new one piece headlining) this is not surprising. The Hollandia Jim mentions is an electric glass slider that drops in from the top like the tilt or remove glass panel type and therefore was an easy fit factory option. To the best of my knowledge anything else is after market. Various types were available in the 80s-90s.

Interesting "Elizabeth's Dad" My 1976 SE6 has a Webasto folding (material) sunroof. So a special fit.Thank you for the info. It does need renovating, which I will do during 2017. Cheers ...> Alan

Hi

I have a factory fitted sunroof to my coupe. It was made by Goldie, these were fitted to numerous motors including Ford, Volvo and Porsche.
The roof is fibreglass but all the metal parts for the operation have rotted away, I will restore back to original but might take sometime to find all the parts (at a reasonable price!!)

My se6b the first to be built in 1983 was factory fitted with a Hollandia electric tilt and slide sunroof.
