Sideways Pictures

Post by Corky » Sun Oct 15, 2017 7:11 pm

If I upload photos to Imgur and then link them, the orientation is correct. If I upload directly to here from my iPhone, then it all goes a bit antipodean on other devices such as Windows PC, iMac and Android. However, they always display correctly on the iPhone and iPad.

I'm applying some more suggested tweaks, others appear to have mixed results with them, but have no way to test the effectiveness of them. If anyone who routinely has the problem notices any differences in behaviour over the next few days please let me know here.

Photo's upside-down

I have a feeling it's linked to the originating device, and how that tags photos that have been rotated and then saved on that device. Especially smartphones/iPads etc which inherently have to cope with images being rotated all the time.

I'm sure I posted something a while back from my iPad mini with a photo which I had rotated then saved in the correct orientation, but which was still displayed upside down on the forum. Taking the same photo and saving it to my pc in the correct orientation, then posting to the forum and all was good.

So it's iPhone related. Is there a solution to this?

No it's not just i-phones - The photo was taken at Silverstone on my Samsung Galaxy, and posted from the same device - it's a totally apple-free post! I'd say it's a mobile-device problem.

I think it may be related to the software INSIDE the phones themselves, as most phones nowadays are "self levelling" on their screen, they may not "Know" the orientation of the finished image.
Hence when rotating the phone to take the pic you must chose the "Normal" orientation to help the software process the finished image.
That`s why there are usually fuzzy strips down each side of films posted on line that have been filmed in Portrait or Landscape mode :w

Not sure if this is significant, but on both Firefox and Chrome the images show "incorrectly" on the forum, but opening the image in a new tab, they're the right way up. In Edge, the images are still incorrectly rotated.

EDIT: Might try adding the following the CSS class "postimage"

Code: Select all

image-orientation: from-image;

Whatever orientation I have the phone in to take the picture, my iPhone and iPad display them the correct way up - only my windows laptop shows them incorrectly. I was reading a thread on another forum this morning and every photo was upside down, even on my iPad (not sure what camera was used).

The problem is the smartphones image software trying to tag the image with what it believes to be the correct orientation and then different image viewers having problems interpreting the image properties and presenting the image in the desired orientation.
One way to solve this is to use freeware such as irfanview to reset the image properties. But it's a pain to do if you have many images.

Yes... Sorry Mark. Should have said in my post that I was agreeing with you. Have not worked out how use irfanview on batch conversions but works well enough on individual pics.

The smartphone or whatever doesn't "try" to tag the image - it "does" encode the orientation data in the photo's EXIF data. I think the reason this problem has become much more prevalent recently is that the greater bandwidth of mobile/wifi connections has allowed people to post photos direct and unedited - not so long ago you would have downloaded from your camera (or phone) to a fixed desktop/laptop/mac then edited the photo in some photo-editing software, and downsized it to make it quicker and easier to upload to the web (and incidentally "fixing" it's orientation as a by-product) these days that doesn't tend to happen as much; higher-bandwidth connections allow people to upload direct to the web, without the intermediate step.

Personally, wearing my photographer's hat, I never upload unedited photos, so their orientation is always fixed as a by-product.
