Unwanted cookie notice?

Post by b.c.flat hat » Tue Apr 24, 2018 8:15 am

Getting it every time I log in. I don't want it but how do I politely tell "it" to, well, you know!

Unwanted cookie notice?

Post by philhoward » Tue Apr 24, 2018 8:23 am

I've had it once on each device I use (phone, laptop and iPad) - just logged out and back in and I don't get it now?

I'm assuming it's something Ian has dropped in yesterday as I don't recall seeing it before then. I assume you clicked the "Got It" button, not just closed the box?

Unwanted cookie notice?

Yes I had this cookie notification as well, but just once yesterday, I clicked to accept it and not had it since. However I notice that the "Type your reply here" box is always at the bottom of the screen now, not noticed this before.

I don't think you can actually stop them, as they'll be written into the home page script.
What you then do can vary: some have a closing 'X' on them ( I use that usually); if they don't have that you cam click on Got it or Accept, or (as I do) if they are not in the way, just ignore them.

Unwanted cookie notice?

Post by Ian » Tue Apr 24, 2018 10:52 am

Unfortunately it's part of the increasingly onerous rules and regulations regarding online user data privacy and security. We have to tell you that we are using cookies on the site. If you click "Got It!" the message disappears and it is registered that you have accepted that we use cookies. You should not then see the message again. There are circumstances where it might re-appear, for example if you delete all the site cookies or if the site software is upgraded. I'm sorry if it's annoying but we don't want to fall foul of the poorly thought out laws.

You may also notice that there is a new box on the Homepage and a new link under Club Documents referring to the Club's Data Protection and Privacy Policy. This is due to new regulations coming into force in May.

Oh, ok, thanks for that, I'm VERY old school and suspicious of electronic machinery that wants to know me better, it's not like we've even been introduced!

I don't blame you for being suspicious! The regulations are an attempt to protect you from the unscrupulous elements online. I don't know how much difference they're going to make because the evil b@$&@|s out there will always find a way past them. And the flak always lands on us who are trying to be clean and honest. (rant end)

Guessing that like me your PC's browser is set to delete all cookies upon exiting so each time you log back in you'll receive a new notification because the original cookie is no longer there so asks again which is what I'm getting, rather that than google facebook uncle tom cobbly and all tracking my every move on the web

Most browsers can be set to accept or reject cookies per domain rather than all or nothing. If you trust that the cookies we use do not transmit personal data or track you (they don't) you can allow cookies for scimitarweb.co.uk and www.scimitarweb.co.uk.
