Possible Style Improvements

Post by Ian » Fri Aug 04, 2017 9:48 am

I have received some criticism of the current style, in particular how it appears on small mobile screens. I have a few suggestions for possible improvement and I invite comment on them.
  • remove the list of moderators (full and mobile view)
  • remove forum icons on mobile view
  • cleaner, sharper icons for read, unread etc.
  • other suggestions? :w

I like the way it is. Just wish I could stay logged in for a little longer!!

However I have found that the just t4s forum app is a good nice easy format to use.

On a mobile , and probably due to the auto resizing of the screen , the " Mark topic as read" sits below the box for New Topic and Search this forum ,
and above the page numbers - especially on busy sections with lots of pages.

This makes it difficult to hit with your finger.

Next , when I do get to find the location of the "Mark topics as read " hyperlink , the information message could do with a shorter time out , this is relevant to pc and mobile.

Thank you

I have fat fingers and find particularly when deleting PMs that I have to zoom the page - one of the differences between using the full or mobile versions on the old system that you need to use on this system (without a mobile version).

In a similar vein, I use "View Unread" as my normal front screen for the forum, and using it on mobile I find it quite tricky to hit the little icon which takes you to the first unread post in the thread, I often seem to end up on the first post, which is a nuisance if it's a multi-page thread.

Yes I know you can do that, but you don't want to have to re-size the display simply in order to select a thread, then resize it back again when you return, so that you can see the whole list again....

I have to admit I find the homepage on the new system a little odd on my iPhone, and if I'm not on wifi I can't stay logged in to reply or view PMs etc

Ah - is that an android thing? If I enlarge a screen to click on an icon, the new screen comes up normal size (on my iPad/iPhone). I do it on most pages when I'm using my phone as my fingers are so fat :D

Perils of rapid testing, I looked at the wiki and shop but not the front page because I never use it :-)

I'm sure Ian can do something there?

Not sure if it's an O/S thing or a browser thing, but using my standard (on mobile) combination of Firefox/Android, the sequence is like this:

you get the "View Unread" list,
enlarge it to the size you want, to hit the button,
select the post, new window opens up at normal size,
read the post at normal size,
exit,
takes you back to the list in the same size as you left it (i.e. enlarged in this case). This means that to see the whole list (if it contains a number of items) you either have to re-zoom it out, or refresh it.

I've just tried it with the default browser as well as Firefox, and that's the same.

In fact, thinking about it a bit more, if I read a post from the "view unread" list and then use the browser "back" button on the pc to return to the list, it doesn't force a page refresh either, but of course there's no issue of zooming to consider there.

Maybe it's how I use Safari (iOS default browser) but my bookmark of "View Unread" is two presses away (Bookmarks > View Unread").

Yes, that's how I normally use Firefox (*On the PC*) my saved bookmark of "View Unread" is in the bookmarks sidebar at the side of the browser window, (and normally always visible at the top) so after I've read a post, I don't bother with the browser back button at all, I just slide the mouse across and hit "view unread" and I'm back to the list in only one click.
All this is a bit irrelevant to the original point though. The original point was that there would simply be no need to faff around zooming the screen, if the tiny little red spot that you have to hit to get to the first unread post, was just a bit bigger? :)
