Photobucket - Thoughts and Ideas

Post by Ian » Tue Jul 18, 2017 6:47 pm

First of all, the admins and myself are working on an upgrade to the forum software that will enable easier addition of images as attachments rather than via third-party hosting 8) . This, however, only addresses the future, and we don't have space to store high resolution images.

A scan of our current database indicates that we have over 50,000 images that are hosted by Photobucket and no longer available on our site. That makes a lot of threads almost useless as each picture is worth a thousand words :hand: . Scimjim is king of the Photobucket attachees with nearly 4,000 images linked :!: .

I need to find a way to improve the situation but so far have found no easy solution. Photobucket very quickly plugged the only known hole in their system after some people successfully exploited it for a short while. :cloud:

Although I have no way of dealing with the problem at the moment, it would be prudent for all you Photobucket users to get all your Photobucket images saved so that there is at least a chance that I could re-instate them sometime in the future. I guess that the images you link to here are mixed up with lots of others in your Photobucket accounts, so I've written a little program to list all the external files you have ever linked to on this forum. It lists other external links as well as those to Photobucket. The list is in csv format so will open in any spreadsheet program but is also readable if opened in something like Notepad. With that list, you can, if you can be bothered, create a folder of all the missing images by downloading them from Photobucket, who say that your images are still there and safe.

This is the link to obtain your personal list as a csv file: External Links

I will continue to work on the forum end of things and, if I find a solution, I'll give you a link to upload your folder of files.

It would be very useful to me, scimjim, if you could retrieve the first ten or so images on your list from Photobucket and email me a zipped folder of them so I have a realistic example to work with.

I hope that this is of some benefit to some of you and the forum as a whole.

Thanks Ian, that's a handy script to find all links if/when a solution or replacement to PB is found.

In addition, I wouldn't close accounts just yet - in case Photobucket change their minds (unlikely) or a stable work around is found (possible). You can download complete albums (easiest on a PC rather than an ipad etc) - I've copied mine onto a USB HDD with the possible intention of hosting them myself in the future.

Will fire up the PC and email you now Ian.

Thanks Jim. I wrote the program as part of investigating and documenting the problem and thought it might be useful to users.

What size is your whole album? Just to give me an idea of storage requirements.

I'm currently trying to automate a re-writing of Photobucket links to alternative locations. It will rely on the actual image file names remaining the same from Photobucket to wherever they are eventually hosted, or there's no way to match them up.

50,000 files at 250kb each would be about 12.5Gb and I think we could manage to store those on our own server now and have about the same again for future images. I'm hoping to be able to resize all images for storage on our server, leaving the full resolution images stored wherever they are.

This is mainly "thinking out loud" so don't hold me to any of it!

I usually post images directly in the threads, sized to 800 x 600; if you are intending to store all images on the server do you have a recommended image size/format we should use, that will minimise storage requirements?

The upcoming new version is intended to automatically resize attached images to a maximum of 1000px in either direction, giving an absolute maximum size of 1000 x 1000. Anything smaller would be stored unchanged. A lot of users get frustrated with the current system where you have to resize the image yourself, as you do now, before uploading it. 800 x 600 is a good size for viewing on screen so continue with that if you are happy to.

Thanks for the feedback; great, I will continue to "downsize" jpegs for Scimitarweb.

I have 60 albums with approx 4000 pictures using 8.7 GB of 18.3 GB available on PB.

Have a look at the retrorides forum, I don't know how they've done it, but it's so easy to upload pics directly.

I'm also talking to David about the PB workaround.

I've just run your link Ian, and discover that I have 3187 PB links. There's no way I'd be able to reinstate those without some sort of automation. I hate to think how many hours I must've spent on the forum to have linked that many

I really appreciate the work that you and others are doing to try and resolve this. If there's anything I can do, please ask.

Yep, great link Ian!
I've never really liked photobucket so have only 190 odd photos there. However, I tried the download album feature and it sends a 1-time link... that doesn't work! (for me anyway)
Anybody else tried to download album with success?
I tried several times, using both Chrome and Firefox to no avail, just get screen: "This album is no longer available"

Personally I use Flickr but I don't know if I can link images from there to the forum?
Any links I have done so far tend to be to my own web site.

"Only" 666 for me :)

I've started to upload mine to my own website hosting (since they upgraded me to unlimited traffic) and try and make the folders the same names (filenames are already which is a bonus - imgur decided to rename them  )so I should only need to change the front bit from the photobucket domain part to my own but it's still a fair chunk of work (be it for me or Ian ).

I've seen Flikr images on here, so the answer must be yes?

Not so bad if you can export the links do a find and replace and then re import. Wouldnt like to do it manually though
